The Director of In-Person School Programs, Prek-12 oversees a range of dynamic educational programs occurring onsite and in classrooms around the city. In addition to overseeing curriculum development, instructor training, and program evaluation, this individual is responsible for improving internal workflows and for developing a strategy to significantly expand the Barnes’s educational service in Philadelphia. Special emphasis will be placed on pro-actively building new partnerships with underserved public schools, based on an analysis of the distribution of the city’s cultural resources across the School District of Philadelphia. The Director of In-Person School Programs works cross-departmentally, collaborating especially with the Director of Community Engagement and Family Programs and the Director of Marketing. This position reports to the Deputy Director for Research, Interpretation and Education.

Education/Training/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies or art history with 7 years of work experience in art, museum or classroom art/art history education OR Master’s degree in one of these fields with 5 years’ work experience
  • Collaborative and visionary leader passionate about creating, delivering, scaling and evaluating in-person for preK-12 audiences
  • Commitment to inclusive, equitable, and empowering collaborative professional relationships and student-centered instruction
  • Demonstrated success developing and sustaining relationships with interdepartmental and external stakeholders
  • Supervisory experience inside or outside a classroom setting
  • Outstanding organizational, supervisory, and written/verbal communication skills

Job Specific Competencies:

  • Directs the operation of all onsite (and 3-touchpoint) programs.
  • Directs curriculum development and new content development.
  • Directs and improves the departmental workflow for booking tours and tracking data.
  • Develops and implements a strategy to market school programs and effectively within the School District of Philadelphia, with special emphasis on building partnerships with underserved schools.
  • Working with CEF, develops a strategy for reaching the broader communities and families of our partner schools.
  • Trains and coaches all instructors on in-gallery teaching and in-school lessons. Observes in-school lessons twice a year for every educator.
  • Establishes learning goals and oversees program evaluation.
  • Networks nationally
  • Directs and leads the effort to convene a working group of Philadelphia museums/ cultural orgs to redistribute resources.
  • Performs other tasks as requested.
