Title: Director of Food Operations

Reports to: Chief Program Officer

Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Hours: Monday - Friday, 7am-3pm with occasional evening & weekend hours

Location: 86th Street Office and 180th Street Warehouse (upon opening)

West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH)—established in 1979 and one of the largest and most successful food pantries in New York City—provides emergency food assistance and supportive services, including access to benefits like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), to low-income New York families. West Side Campaign Against Hunger's mission is to alleviate hunger by ensuring all New Yorkers have access with dignity to a choice of healthy food and supportive services.

WSCAH provides nearly 4 million pounds of healthy, fresh food to more than 75,000 food insecure individuals annually via WSCAH's 86th Street location, home delivery, and 29 partner locations across NYC. The Director of Food Operations leads WSCAH's overall food operations to ensure that WSCAH's community of customers have access with dignity to a choice of healthy food.

Overview:

The main areas of responsibility for the Director of Food Operations include, overseeing a team of staff and volunteers to successfully carryout food procurement, food rescue, inventory management, food safety, sanitation, food order fulfillment, delivery and distribution. This position manages the food department's budget and ensures that WSCAH is maximizing in-kind food resources and successfully maintaining expenses to remain within budget. In Fall 2023, WSCAH is opening up a new warehouse location located on 180th Street in Washington Heights that will have over 7,000 square feet of storage space, including dry, cold and freezer storage. The Food Operations Director will play a key role in the optimization of this space to support efficient and effective emergency food distribution.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for the Director of Food is $80,000-$90,000 based on skills and qualifications. WSCAH offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 100% company-paid medical and dental insurance for employees and applicable dependents, company-sponsored life insurance, 403b retirement plan with 6% match after one year of employment, as well as paid holidays that include a winter break between Christmas and New Year's Day and vacation leave.

Key areas of responsibility will include:

Food Operations and Operational Efficiency / Planning
  • Direct the Food Operations department and supervise the Food Operations team
  • Lead the operational transition to the new warehouse, optimizing procurement, inventory management, and packing across 3 locations
  • Manage a large annual food budget to ensure spending is within budget and that WSCAH maintains a consistent inventory of high quality, healthy foods
  • Track and report food expenditures and create procurement plans to reduce costs while maintaining quality and variety of food offerings
  • Develop and implement data-driven systems for food inventory
  • Create a cycle menu for food boxes to ensure variety, cultural sensitivity, and high customer satisfaction
  • Create daily and weekly operational schedules for staff and volunteers to receive deliveries, pack food, and deliver packed food to 30 distribution locations
  • Maximize in-kind food resources and build relationships with food vendors to create opportunities for additional in-kind food procurement
  • Maintain positive relationships with Food Bank for New York City, City Harvest, and other vendors/donors
  • Maintain the safety and sanitation of all food storage locations in accordance with New York City and State health codes
  • Play a lead role in the pilot and implementation of strategic program models that bring food to people and maximize choice for our community of customers. This includes current projects like WSCAH's digital choice pantry, community hubs, and home delivery.
  • Manage the maintenance and operations of a fleet of trucks, other vehicles, and equipment

Organizational and Program Management

  • Be an active, participatory, team and mission-focused member of Leadership team of WSCAH
  • Represent WSCAH at external meetings, including the Roundtable and other emergency feeding collective purchase groups
  • Collaborate with Director of Partnerships and Community Engagement to ensure successful fulfillment and delivery of all partner and home delivery orders
  • Support WSCAH's volunteer program, including, assigning and training volunteer roles and responsibilities to maximize pantry operations, ensuring safety, and policy adherence
  • Train staff and volunteers (as appropriate) on warehouse safety, use of equipment, and vehicles
  • Maintain welcoming and efficient service for customers
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with co-workers across program areas - assist co-workers when necessary and be a strong team player

Qualifications
  • Bilingual English/Spanish, preferred
  • Warehouse management experience, preferred
  • Experience managing food service operations (events, institutional food, banquets, etc.) is a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management ability
  • Great communication skills; ability to motivate people to a goal
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner
  • Experience with inventory management
  • Ability to use online food-ordering tools

  • New York City Food Handlers Certificate, or willingness to acquire
  • Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Word, Excel and other relevant software
  • Must be able to regularly lift a minimum of 50 lbs. of weight, but no employee shall be required to lift, transport or otherwise handle materials or objects with a per unit weight greater than fifty (50) pounds unless the Employer provides an appropriate lifting/transporting/handling device(s).
  • Regularly required to physically operate routine equipment
