Job description
The Extended Care Unit Director of Nursing has 24/7 accountability for assigned areas under the direct supervision by the Vice President Planning and Post-Acute Care through a direct or matrix reporting relationship. This position is responsible for daily operation of their assigned areas, which includes focusing on clinical and managerial responsibilities. This individual demonstrates core competencies within the discipline of Nursing and business aspects as related to patient care. This position is required as part of the core job duties to provide direct nursing care to patients during times of census fluctuation, unfilled vacancies, and increased patient needs. The Director of Nursing creates and communicates the vision in moving employees to a new way of thinking and working. In collaboration with the with respective vice president(s), allocates department resources in an efficient and economic manner to enable each resident to attain or maintain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. Collaborates with other departments, medical professionals, consultants, and organizations, including government agencies and advocacy groups, to develop, support and coordinate resident care, related administrative functions, and to represent the interests of the hospital. Has a direct reporting relationship to the Vice President Planning and Post-Acute Care and accepts direction from the Chief Nursing Officer. 3 years of recent and relevant experience is required.

Responsibilities of the DON - Director of Nursing
- Effectively triage patients
- Plan, direct, assess and provide nursing care according to the policies and procedures of the hospital and department.
- Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
- Provide basic care
- Complete patient documentation
- Will administer vaccines
Requirements of the DON - Director of Nursing
- If also a Registered Nurse, must possess a current Indiana license as a Registered Nurse and have graduated from an accredited school of nursing with an Associate's degree in nursing.
- Bachelors preferred.
- Two years of professional nursing experience in the long-term care setting is required, and a minimum of three years' experience in nursing administration or a comparable management position or completed a nursing management course with a clinical component or one year of nursing supervision in past 5 years.
- Must possess and demonstrate a high degree of leadership, organizational ability, and communication skills.
- Knowledge of long-term care management, policies, budgeting, personnel management, and census development is required.
- Indiana Nurse Aide Training Program course must be completed within 6–9 months of hire date.
- Current CPR & ACLS certifications are required.
