Job description
SUMMARY
Driver will work under the direction of the Recreation & Community Life Director. Driver and adhere to all Recreation & Community Life Department policies and procedures, as well as the State of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicle guidelines.
DUTIES
- Provides transportation services for qualified Walton Hills residents to and from their doctor and hair appointments, bank, post office, grocery shopping, as well as Recreation Program activities and Village-Sponsored events.
- Provides transportation for participants in the Summer Parker Camp Program to the Walton Hills Lake Club and/or any other field trip or local activity location.
- Responsible for keeping vehicles clean, putting fuel in vehicles and reporting anything that may need to be repaired on vehicles or communicating any regular maintenance needed.
- Required to work Recreation programs and/or Special Events as needed.
- Inspect vehicles prior to driving and document any repairs/maintenance needed.
- Drive adults and youth in city-owned vehicles.
- Assist passengers as needed in and out of city vehicles, loading and unloading their equipment and belongings (wheelchairs, walkers, canes, packages, etc.) as they enter and exit vehicle.
- Loads and unloads wheelchairs from vehicle.
- Refuels vehicles at local gas station as needed to keep vehicles always at least with ½ tank of gas.
- Follows transport paperwork as outlined by office staff and collects fees from passengers.
- Inspects the general vehicle condition and reports maintenance needs prior to operation.
- Keeps the interior of vehicle clean and orderly.
- May be required to administer basic first aid.
- Attends training programs to maintain and/or improve job skills.
- Occasionally be asked to serve as the Driver and Trip Escort on Bus Trips.
- Perform other duties and special projects as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work a flexible schedule and/or work overtime or evenings and weekends if needed.
- Ability to obtain Red Cross Training in CPR and General First Aid.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to assist Seniors/Persons with Disabilities into their seats in a vehicle if needed.
- Ability to be able to work calmly but effectively in an emergency situation if needed.
- Ability to work in outside weather conditions.
- Ability to walk and push a wheelchair and/or assist Seniors/Persons with Disabilities accordingly.
- Ability to obtain a CDL License.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Current Driver’s License with at least five years of driving experience and a clean driving record.
- Knowledge/experience in driving a 12-Passenger Bus.
- Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger Endorsement to be able to drive a larger Bus OR at least willing to train to get a CDL License.
- Ability to effectively work and communicate well with persons with disabilities, senior citizens, co-workers and the general public.
- Knowledge and experience in using a vehicle with a Wheelchair Lift or at least willing to train.
- Previous experience driving professional a plus!
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED
- 2+ years of experience driving a 12-passenger Bus.
- Experience in an occupation involving regular and direct public contact.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the essential functions of this classification, the employee is required to frequently stand, walk, and sit; required to quickly respond to emergency situations and to location of incident. May be required to stoop, bend, and twist. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and, reach with hands and arms, handle, manipulate and feel; ability to reach with hands and arms; ability to speak and hear; ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, climb flights of stairs; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the essential functions of this classification the employee occasionally may be required to work in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals. The environment can occasionally be noisy and chaotic. The employee must be able to complete specific administrative tasks while maintaining availability to public for inquires and response to emergency situations.
