Job description
About Us
Voss Structural Engineering, PLLC is a small structural engineering firm located in Frankfort, Illinois, a southwest suburb of Chicago. The founder, Frank Voss, previously worked at GRC Engineering in Oak Forest, IL for about 20 years before starting this firm in the summer of 2022. We perform structural design and consulting services for a variety of different clients across a wide geographical base. We have experience with many different building codes. We are dedicated to upholding the building codes in the entire design to ensure minimum required standards of safety are met and to help the permitting process run smoothly.
A majority of our projects are small with a single engineer performing the entire design on each project. We work with many types of structures ranging from signs and billboards to single family residential, from miscellaneous steel structures to industrial, educational, healthcare, and commercial buildings. Our scope ranges from a single beam substitution to full structural design depending on the client’s needs. We work for owners, architects, engineers, and contractors.
Education required: BS in Civil/Structural Engineering minimum
Licensure required: EIT registration minimum
Experience required: 0-3 years experience in structural engineering and design preferred. Knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI are required. Familiarity with current and past versions of the codes and standards is preferred. Familiarity with other local building codes not modeled after IBC is a plus.
Proficiency with structural engineering software is required. RISA-3D, Autocad, and Excel are used regularly. However, proficiency with any structural design software (Staad, Ram, Etabs, Sap, etc.) may be substituted for RISA-3D. Visual Basic, Autolisp, macros, programming knowledge is a plus, but not required. Although we have no immediate plans to adopt BIM, any experience the applicant would bring to the table for discussions would be beneficial.
Job Description: Will perform structural design and possibly drafting. Most projects are small in size and scope. Must be self-driven and capable of independent work. Will need to quickly develop a familiarity with the client’s specifications, practices, and construction methods, as well as with programs, staff, and operating procedures of the company. Most work is in the office, but some local jobs may require meetings or structural observations on site.
A majority of projects are small miscellaneous steel structures including signage structures. But we also work with concrete, wood, aluminum, and masonry. Experience with these materials is a plus; however, learning speed in dealing with new materials and structural systems is more important than specific material experience.
We work four 9-hour days and a 4-hour Friday.
