Salary Range: $4,691 -$6,683 per month. Hiring salary is budgeted at $5,000 - $5,200 per month commensurate with education and experience.

Position Summary: Under administrative direction of the Director of Inclusion Initiatives, the Education Opportunity Program (EOP) Coordinator will provide comprehensive academic, personal, financial, and career counseling to prospective, new and continuing EOP students. The EOP Coordinator manages a caseload of EOP students and assists in the admission, transition, and retention of EOP students through counseling and advisement, workshops, classes, referrals, and other forms of interventions. The EOP Coordinator has full professional responsibility for assisting students to resolve any problem(s) that affects their ability to be successful in their educational and career pursuits and make appropriate referrals to campus services and other resources.
About California State University Maritime Academy: Established in 1929, California State University Maritime Academy, a campus of the California State University, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. Located on the scenic Vallejo waterfront, the campus serves a student population of approximately 1000 undergraduates and 50 graduate students.
Cal Maritime offers seven baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs, Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Transportation and Oceanography. The undergraduate curriculum includes licensing programs for future merchant marine, coast guard and naval reserve officers. Cal Maritime also offers a Master of Science in Transportation and Engineering Management degree, as well as a number of extended learning programs and courses.
Major Responsibilities:
Administration and Coordination of EOP Program:
- Represent EOP in appropriate campus committees to advocate for equity-minded policy and practices.
- Enhance wrap-around support for students by initiating and maintaining cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, including faculty, staff, student organizations and off-campus community groups. Key campus groups include Admissions, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Health Center, University Advising, academic support services or tutoring, Housing and Residence Life, Financial Aid, Associated Students (ASCMA), Accessibility and Disability Services Office (ADSO), Office of Community Engagement, Career Services, etc.
- Participate in campus wide events and programs, which seek to recruit, retain, or encourage the success of low-income and educationally disadvantaged students.
- Plan, develop, and conduct retention-related workshops, sessions, and/or courses, as required; maintain regular contact with students on caseload and monitor each student's academic progress.
- Oversee the Summer Bridge (SB) Program, EOP Orientation Sessions, and EOP Graduation Celebration.
- Assist with interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating Summer Bridge instructors, tutors, workshop facilitators, Peer Mentors, and student assistants, as needed.
- Develop and present workshops on various academic issues to meet the needs of EOP students and SB participants.
- Participate in regular departmental, component, and Summer Bridge meetings; coordinate in the development of departmental communications as required.
- Participate in appropriate professional development activities to remain current on relevant issues pertaining to the EOP population.
- In communication with the Director of Inclusion Initiatives, serve as the campus representative to the CSU Chancellor’s Office statewide network of EOP Directors across the 23 CSU campuses. Attend quarterly meetings (in-person or virtual) for the statewide EOP Directors group.
- Supervise, lead, and oversee the team of student staff members (Peer Mentors). Coordinate and lead student leadership training for student staff members semester. Oversee student staff members’ engagement in leadership responsibilities to meet with students monthly and host EOP social and community building activities
- Communicate with Financial Aid before every academic year to ensure that the annual EOP Grant is issued to eligible EOP students.
- Communicate with the Bookstore before every term to ensure that EOP students receive their semester bookstore credits
- Oversee the EOP webpage through edits and updates with the support of the Department of Public Affairs and Strategic Communications
Outreach, Recruitment, and Admissions:
- Collaborate with the Admissions department on EOP outreach, recruitment, admissions, and matriculation as needed.
- Partner with Admissions to identify key high schools or community colleges with dense prospective EOP students and facilitate outreach presentations to enhance EOP recruitment efforts
- Identify Cal Maritime applicants who are EOP eligible to conduct targeted outreach for EOP applications
- Evaluate EOP applications and supplemental forms for academic eligibility, enrollment, and program participation.
- Conduct interviews for admission consideration, as appropriate.
- Provide admissions counseling to returning EOP students who are reapplying or seeking reinstatement to the university.
- Develop creative and innovative strategies to expand the visibility of EOP to prospective students
Intrusive Advising:
- Independently provide comprehensive advisement, individually and in groups, which include academic, personal, financial, or career-related counseling to a caseload of current EOP students.
- Perform in-depth analysis of student skills, abilities, previous academic performance, and factors contributing to the student's academic progress to assist students in program planning, course advising, major and career exploration. Maintain detailed and current records on each assigned student, including program of study outline, quarterly academic progress, counseling/advising contacts, referrals, and test scores.
- Assist students in identifying & evaluating academic challenges, taking into account their aptitudes and abilities as related to their particular needs and circumstances; select suitable educational or vocational goals, and implement corrective measures to alleviate skill deficiencies.
- Collaborate with University Advising to provide appropriate advising for EOP students related to their academic performance as needed
- Discuss and reinforce student success strategies such as time management, note taking, study skills, self-care, etc.
- Assist students in making progress toward completing their specific academic program
- Participate in Early Alert initiatives through relevant case management and advising platforms (EAB Navigate).
- Inform and refer students to other institutional resources as needed, such as tutoring services or CAPS
- Interpret and provide rationale for institutional policies, procedures, and requirements
- Develop and administer an academic success plan with students who are on academic probation, which includes meeting with them regularly to discuss strategies for academic success
Required Qualifications:
- Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
- Thorough knowledge of higher education issues, including those affecting underserved populations
- Working knowledge of the policies, practices, and activities of Student Services programs outside the program to which assigned.
- Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
- Ability to carry out very complex assignments without detailed instructions.
- Ability to determine the appropriate course of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals/groups in personal interactions of a sensitive nature.
- General knowledge of individual counseling techniques.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multi-cultural environment including students, faculty, and secondary school professionals.
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and planning skills and efficiency in handling multiple projects.
- Ability to independently advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
- Ability to analyze and define complex organizational, policy or procedural problems, collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action.
- Ability to speak in front of large groups.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of minority and under-represented populations as determined by demographics of the local areas served by California State University Maritime Academy
- Knowledge of departmental, divisional and university protocol preferred.
- Knowledge of CSU admissions processes
- General knowledge of Cal Maritime/CSU infrastructure
- General knowledge of the CSU Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) structure, operations, and guidelines
- General knowledge of relevant software and platforms, including EAB Navigate, People Soft, Canvas, etc.
Special Conditions:
Physical, Mental and Environmental Conditions: Involves mainly sitting; walking and standing is minimal; involves lifting lightweight objects limited to 15 pounds.
Background Check: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check, DMV records check and fingerprinting) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
