POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a variety of tasks on various types of vehicle/equipment such as automotive, light/medium/heavy duty diesel trucks, and various heavy construction equipment. Jobs, such as maintenance inspections and light repairs, involve minor adjustments, testing, measuring, and/or replacement of parts and components. Responsible for light building maintenance on the City’s various facilities, which might include, plumbing fixtures, windows, doors, light carpentry work, painting etc.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Develops, implements, and manages the Public Works shop equipment, inventory of tools, equipment, and vehicles.
- Evaluate the status of mechanical equipment, trailers, and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs.
- Performs tire mounting/dismounting and repairs.
- Performs preventative maintenance in fleet.
- Processes service work orders and monitors the quality of mechanical work performed.
- Prepares and maintains departmental records.
- Assists in maintaining the City's fuel inventory; tracks fuel usage and performs daily mileage updates; charges out costs and provides fuel reports to appropriate City departments.
- Compiles and analyzes fleet services data; generates and submits a variety of departmental reports pertaining to vehicle repairs, current usage, fuel history, and parts acquisition/inventory.
- Prepares and organizes disposal of the City's fleet.
- Picks up and delivers
- Maintains work area, tools, and equipment.
- Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
- Performs minor building and facility maintenance.
- Keeps shop and company tools clean and in good working order.
- Performs data entry in maintenance software to track repairs.
- Subject to after-hours call-out for emergency situations.
- Assist Water, Sewer, and Street departments when necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
- Must arrive at work on time and must maintain a regular and reliable level of attendance.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to:
- Evaluate and implement a comprehensive Inventory program; Water, Sewer, Streets, and shop equipment.
- Read and interpret manufacturer schematics and vendor diagrams, manuals, and specifications to complete installation and repair of complex fleet and heavy equipment related parts and systems.
- Use and maintain automotive tools and equipment utilized in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and diagnostics.
- Use strategies to diagnose the source and the extent of the problem.
Knowledge of:
- Basic theories, practices, tools, parts, diagnostic equipment, and materials necessary for the effective maintenance and repair of fleet units.

Skilled in:
- General maintenance and repair of various vehicles and equipment, and light building maintenance.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS
Primarily in an outdoor environment with the ability to operate indoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during summer and winter months.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Uses standard office equipment including multi-line telephone, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, printer, etc.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or equivalent or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- 1+ years of mechanic experience on light and heavy equipment preferred.
- 1+ years of light building maintenance experience.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and MVR check.
- A Valid Class C Texas motor vehicle driver’s license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 12 months of employment.
- Ability to obtain a class D water or sewer license within 1 year of employment.
