Department Purpose
Allied Health Paramedics must be flexible and open to assisting in various tasks they may not be accustomed to. An AHPs successful integration into the community will be reliant on a positive attitude, compassionate interpersonal skills, and genuine interest in public service. AHPs are responsible for prioritizing, scheduling, and completing tasks associated with emergency and non-emergency response activities, wellness and preventive health education, and community outreach.
Professional who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/ projects/ tasks of moderate scope and complexity; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action.
Allied Health Paramedics will operate in the field under the general supervision of a physician (medical direction) and may include written and verbal orders. The supervising physician may not be physically present. The AHPs shall confer with the supervising physician and other medical professionals as needed or required by law.
Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Allied Health Paramedic (AHP) provides proactive, preventive care through an integrated, team approach that is intended to help improve the overall health and wellness of the campus community. Provides general management for population health, delivery system reform/ innovation and accountable care. This role extends access to non-urgent health care through patient visits and/or community-based services. The AHP works in cooperation with other stakeholders, care providers, and the patient’s support system. The AHP works in conjunction with a UCDFD Allied Health Nurse Navigator and many other medical and behavioral health providers to develop an individualized plan of care.
Cooperatively, the team provides outreach education to the community-at-large.
AHPs work under the general supervision of the EMS Captain/Pre-hospital Care Coordinator within the UCDFD EMS/Pre-Hospital Care Division and are provided additional direction by the UCDFD Allied Health Nurse Navigator and Fire Department Medical Director. AHPs are formally trained in many aspects of medicine and are capable of providing a variety of diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health care services up to the Advanced Life Support (ALS) level. Working as a member of the pre-hospital care team, they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, treat injuries, and refer patients to appropriate community resources. AHPs document patient encounters, navigate to appropriate care resources, and instruct/counsel patients.
Works with medical and behavioral health staff, community groups and institutions, and subject matter experts in developing and implementing delivery system reforms.
Primary assignment is to non-emergency calls; however, they may occasionally be exposed to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

- May be required to stand for long periods of time and do considerable walking while carrying medical equipment
Must be able to carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds or more (i.e. EMS equipment, trauma bags, people) without assistance of an aid, for distances of more than 20 feet and multiple flights of stairs - Must be able to enter data in a computer (PC), tablet or other devices, with or without keyboard, to document reports and patient charting.
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of medical machinery and equipment including, but not limited to, suction units, immobilization equipment, intravenous infusions, syringes and medications, and cardiac monitors/defibrillators/pacers, two-way radios, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Schedules vary and will include weekends, nights, and holidays. AHPs will respond to medical calls for service in a pre-hospital setting.
- Work at emergency scenes may involve strenuous physical exertion, often under adverse climatic conditions, in these situations, the employee is exposed and subjected to danger and hazards that could result in severe injury.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Additional Minimum License/Certification:
- CPR Certification
Minimum Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Specific UC Davis Allied Health Paramedic Training is to be completed within 9 months of hire through agency approved course work, on-the-job training, or any other combination of educational resources as approved.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
- Knowledge of current trends in emergency medicine, allied health, behavioral health, and public health fields.
- Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation.
- Knowledge of performance improvement and evidence-based practice.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education/Experience:
- Undergraduate or Graduate Degree in life sciences, behavioral sciences, or allied health care professional school.
- Successful completion of an accepted EMT-Paramedic program.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
- Possess interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with clinical and professional staff and the community.
- Ability to adapt to change in a positive, professional, and productive manner.
