TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Master's degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in supervision, educational administration and high school curriculum.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years teaching experience. Teaching in a high school classroom preferred, but not required. Experience as a school administrator preferred. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
  • Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
    • Ability to understand instructional problems and to assist teachers in their solution;
    • Knowledge of trends in education and ability to effectively communicate, convey, and interpret them to staff;
    • Ability to conceptualize the high school program;
    • Ability to supervise clerical personnel;
    • Ability to work with supplementary service personnel;
    • Knowledge of school accounting and budgeting;
    • Ability to organize administrative services;
    • Thorough knowledge of curriculum, instruction, organizational patterns, school operations, and learner services;
    • Demonstrated competence in staff selection, training, supervision and evaluation;
    • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to act effectively under stress;
    • Ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to ensure outstanding performance and building culture;
    • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Demonstrate successful experience in shared decision making, program development, staff supervision and evaluation;
  • Knowledge of and experience in implementation of innovations in education; alternative instructional strategies, alternative assessment methods; blended instructional support; in-class support for special needs students, instruction based on student performance and decision making, peer tutoring, cooperative learning, competency based education, and job-embedded staff development;
  • Knowledge of continuous quality improvement practices preferred;
  • Experience with data-driven leadership preferred;
  • Familiarity with the Charlotte Danielson Framework suggested.
  • Knowledge and ability to lead professional learning communities (PLC’s) preferred.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Plan and direct the instructional program and building management requirements of the high school to which assigned.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Up and down motion in the office; bending stretching; and lifting up to 40 pounds. Mobility in and around office/school area.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Improve instructional outcomes through systemic and systematic continuous improvement efforts.
  • Responsible for administering and supervising the total school program and providing educational leadership for the students and staff members consistent with the educational goals of the community and the district strategic plan.
  • Establish a climate and culture conducive to learning, defining roles, planning and coordinating programs, effecting change, and decision-making.
  • Direct involvement with district wide curriculum review.
  • Coordinate instructional activities; allocate staff, time, and space.
  • Participate in development and management of the school budget.
  • Approve all requisitions for supplies and materials and verify to the business office that budgeted funds are available.
  • Interview all prospective teachers and recommend selection thereof.
  • Implement program evaluation plans.
  • Prepare all required reports.
  • Supervise and evaluate teachers on a systematic basis and discuss results with each.
  • Provide direct supervision to all classified personnel.
  • Utilize data to inform building practices and improvements.
  • Direct Career and Technical Education (CTE) in the district; including the budgeting and allocation of federal Perkins Fund grant dollars.
  • Responsible for the Advanced Placement (AP) programs in the high school, including registration and testing logistics coordination.
  • Supervise the transcription of high school credit and the equalization of transcripts for transferring students in conjunction with professional school counseling staff.
  • Coordinate third-party educational services such as dual credit and online opportunities in conjunction with professional school counseling staff.
  • Align school practices and policies to South Dakota State Law and South Dakota Department of Education’s guidelines, administrative rules, and policies.
  • Assist with directing and supervising the Bobcat Plains Academy alternative school program in conjunction with the high school assistant principal.
  • Plan and conduct senior high commencement activities.
  • Perform such other duties as assigned by superintendent.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze, share, and utilize school and student achievement data and satisfaction data to develop and implement a school improvement management plan.
  • Implement systematic procedures to assess program effectiveness.
  • Monitor curriculum implementation to ensure that the appropriate content and sequence are followed.
  • Develop a master schedule and related duty assignments.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of a school discipline policy that is consistent with the BSD policies and state law.
  • Identify staff training needs; develop and implement school improvement training plan to meet those needs.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with the PTA and other community organizations to ensure ongoing, two-way communication and initiate activities which foster productive parent and community involvement.
  • Serve on necessary task forces and committees.

  • Length of contract: 223 days

This position will be evaluated annually by the Superintendent
