Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer

SUMMARY: Performs skilled/specialized inspection and plan review work involving the interpretation and enforcement of codes and regulations for building, health and safety issues and performs related work, as required.

The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

1. Review plans and perform inspections to determine project scope and compliance with adopted codes and standards.

2. Maintain accurate records of permits and inspections.

3. Inspect existing buildings and premises for change of use, occupancy or compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.

4. Work with the public to ensure structures are safe and ready for occupancy.

5. Inspect construction projects for compliance with all parts of Title 25 of the Georgia Code of Regulations, including building/fire codes and standards.

6. Respond to inquiries from the public and contractors regarding codes and other issues with projects, both over the phone and at the public counter.

7. Enforce compliance with State regulations and Local ordinances including those pertaining to land use, nuisance housing, building codes, health and safety, and other matters of public concern.

8. Prepare evidence and appear in court in support of legal actions taken by the County.

12. Participate in professional/public meetings and training as required.

13. Support the relationship between Charlton County and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors, the public and county staff .

14. Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and county information.

15. Perform other duties as required or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

1. State policies, procedures, codes and ordinances.

2. Chapter 25 of the State of Georgia Rules and Regulations.

3. Construction scheduling, practices and methods.

4. Accurate financial records, documentation materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.

2. Five years' experience in a construction related field.

3. An Associate's degree may substitute for the required experience.

4. Possession of or ability to obtain within 18 months of appointment, Level 1 Code Enforcement Certificate from the Georgia Association of Code Enforcement.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment.

2. May need to traverse uneven terrain, work in trenches, climb ladders and walk on steep roofs.

3. May be exposed to heavy machinery, extreme weather conditions and hazardous chemicals.

4. Must have the mobility to visit county job sites on a regular basis.

5. Visits in inclement weather in a construction zone environment with occasional exposure to hazardous work conditions.

6. Physical demands consist of frequent standing, climbing, walking, lifting, bending or stooping.

7. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.

8. Must be able to see and hear in normal range with or without correction and communicate both verbally and in written form with great facility and be understood.

9. Must have the stamina to work long hours as assigned and be willing to work an irregular schedule, attend evening meetings, if necessary.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $14.58 - $19.53 per hour
