(POSITION OPEN TO FEMALE APPLICANTS ONLY AS PER PREA 115.315; TAC 343.444 & TAC 343.626)
At least 21 years of age, with a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must have a vehicle and current Texas Drivers License and show proof of automobile liability insurance coverage.
Must have work experience that includes, but is not limited to correctional childcare, residential or direct service provider care for children with behavior problems (military experience may be considered in lieu of correctional childcare, residential or direct service provider care for children with behavior problems).
Must have knowledge of basic first-aid and personal hygiene; maturity coupled with a wholesome interest in young people and an ability to work with all types of children.
Must have an ability to work positively and effectively with severely maladjusted children in situations involving considerable stress.
Must be willing to learn of the deviant forms of behavior in disturbed children and handle such behavior in a positive and as constructive manner.
Must be willing to organize, facilitate and participate with children in a variety of activities, including but not limited to: recreational work, education, work and creative pursuits of overall well-being.
Preferably bilingual (Spanish/English), not mandatory.
Must have knowledge of or be willing to learn military drill and ceremony, physical training formations and military style etiquette.
Must pass a pre-employment physical fitness test with a minimum score of 70% or above.
Must be willing to learn and proficiently facilitate military style physical training and drill and ceremony with facility youth.
Must pass a pre-employment urine analysis screening.
Must be able to pass pre-employment background investigation.
Previous required work experience must include:
At least one (1) year work related experience in a correctional facility - Required ( Military experience with honorable discharge may be considered in lieu of 1 year experience).
and/or
Six (6) or more months of work experience that includes, but is not limited to youth childcare, or residential/direct service provider care for juveniles with behavioral problems.
Stimulates the interests and supervises the child's participation in a comprehensive program curriculum, including but not limited to the education program, basic arts and crafts, indoor/outdoor sports and with guidance and leadership; supervises, instructs and facilitates various phases of the department's programs.
Assigns and supervises juveniles in daily house keeping details as required.
Supervises the seating and serving of each meal as well as enforces table manners and general behavior.
Maintains basic discipline and control of juveniles through careful and consistent enforcement of the rules and regulations; observes juveniles constantly to detect potentially dangerous or deceptive acts.
Through personal contact, helps relieve the children's anxieties and tension through elementary and limited counseling procedures.
Administers CPR and First Aid as required.
Maintains a daily activity log, documenting any over the counter medication required and administered, unusual or out of the ordinary behavior, arrival and departure of visitors and other pertinent items of information as required by department policies and procedures.
Attends and actively participates in all training required and scheduled.
Required to keep track of and maintain minimum training standards required for certification and re-certification as a juvenile detention officer.
Respect and protect the civil and legal rights of all the children and parents who come into contact with the Juvenile Probation Department.
Report immediately, without reservation, any corrupt or unethical behavior, which could affect either the child or the integrity of the facility.
Report immediately, without reservation, any allegations of abuse, neglect, exploitation or misconduct and cooperate fully with any investigations related to those allegations.
Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of all private information and safeguard that information to not be used beyond which is needed to perform proper, professional duty.
Encourage relationships with co-workers and colleagues that promote mutual respect within the department, the profession and improvement of its quality of service.
A Juvenile Detention Officer may not maintain an inappropriate relationship with the children served by the department. An inappropriate relationship can include but is not limited to: bribery, solicitation of acceptance of gifts, favors, or services from the children or their families, and the appearance of an inappropriate relationship.
Restrain juveniles according to the non-violent crisis intervention training taught by certified Handle with Care Institute instructors.
Adhere to Juvenile Probation Department Personnel, Detention, or Challenge Program Policies and Procedures and Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) Standards.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Team Leaders, Senior Officer, or facility Director.
All officers employed with the Juvenile Probation Department are expected to adhere to the TJJD Code of Ethics.
Provides for the care, welfare, safety, security and control of the juveniles detained in the post-adjudication facility. Through a firm and fair supervision style, a juvenile detention officer facilitates and supervises the activities of the juveniles as mandated by the Standard Operating Procedures and through the established chain of command. The position involves shift, weekend and holiday work. Juvenile Detention/Correction Officers are under the direct supervision of the facility administrator, the Director or designee.
ACCOUNTABILITY
All Juvenile Detention Officers are under the direct supervision of the Team Leaders, Senior Officer and facility Director. The Deputy Chief and Chief Juvenile Probation Officer complete the Chain of Command.
16 holidays per year as recognized.
Accruals are credited on a biweekly basis and available for use as it is accrued after 6 months of continuous service. Year to year carry-over accruals are limited to twice the employee's annual rate. Part-time employees accrue vacation at half the rate of full-time employees.

15 days (5 through less than 15 years of service)
20 days (15 years of service or over)
Accruals are credited on a biweekly basis and available for use as it is accrued after 3 months of full time service. Employees accrue 15 days of sick leave per year.
Military Leave – 15 days of paid leave per fiscal year for active military service
Bereavement Leave – 3 days of paid leave for the death of an immediate family members and 4 hours for other family members and friends.

RETIREMENT
Retirement benefits are provided by the Texas County and District Retirement Fund (TCDRS). Regular employees become a member of TCDRS upon hire. All regular employees are required to contribute 7% to the retirement fund and the County matches 250% upon eligible retirements.
Employees may defer earnings, on a pre-tax basis, into a 457 deferred compensation program. This is an optional program.
LIFE INSURANCE
Full-time County employees are provided a basic life insurance benefit of $10,000 life insurance at no cost. Supplemental coverage is available for additional fees.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY
The Long-Term disability program provides 60% of the employees' income when the employee becomes disabled because of an illness, injury or accident for a period above 90 days.
SHORT-TERM DISABILITY
The Short-Term disability program provides 60% of the employees' income when the employee becomes disabled because of an illness, injury or accident for a period shorter than 90 days.
RETIREE HEALTH INSURANCE
Employees who retire from the County are eligible to continue Health Insurance at the rate set by the El Paso County Risk Pool Board.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Employees are enrolled in an Employee Assistance Program that provides a variety of counseling services.
SECTION 125 MEDICAL & DEPENDENT CARE PROGRAM
The section 125 program is optional for employees and provides a method to pay medical and dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis.

Reimbursement of $15 per month for 6 months of continuous gym usage.
EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EdAP)
Reimbursement up to $2000 per calendar year for eligible education expenses.
