WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


The Land Steward works with staff and volunteers to maintain public access infrastructure such as trails, kiosks, boardwalks, and interpretive materials. The Land Steward assists with stewardship tasks such as boundary posting, removal of non-native invasive plants and legal compliance monitoring in accordance with Land Trust Alliance standards. The Land Steward will participate in fire management activities, including assisting with prescribed burns, preparing fire lines, and post-burn monitoring. The SVPA coordinates and supervises large-scale volunteer events such as invasive species management and species monitoring. They will work closely with staff on the Preserve Volunteer Program by recruiting, training, and corresponding with volunteer stewards on stewardship-related activities. They may also assist with development of community engagement projects, coordinate with partner organizations, and process forms and prepare reports regarding volunteers.

  • Organize and lead volunteer workdays and events with minimal supervision.
  • Work with TNC Long Pond office staff to accomplish conservation goals with the help of volunteers.
  • Perform considerable physical work in variable weather conditions, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Perform preserve maintenance tasks (maintain kiosks, sign-in sheets/brochures, build and maintain trails, mark boundaries, control invasives) and monitor preserves.
  • Assist with prescribed fire preparation and participate on prescribed burns on TNC and partner lands.
  • Work closely with staff on volunteer development opportunities.
  • Travel to and work in remote environments with occasional overnight stays.
  • Work some evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
  • Utilize financial responsibility when purchasing with corporate credit card and reporting expenses.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU


The Land Steward assists with land management operations, including prescribed fire throughout Pennsylvania. The Land Steward coordinates & supervises skilled volunteers throughout northeastern Pennsylvania, and will be based at TNC’s Long Pond office. This position advances our work in improving private and public lands, increases opportunities for volunteering and connects the Conservancy with untapped communities.

The salary range for this position is between $36,500 and $39,000 per year.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • High school diploma or GED and 6 month’s experience working outdoors and with people (e.g.: land management, landscaping, camp counselor, or similar experience).
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Ability to pass Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level (3 mile walk with 45-pound pack in under 45 minutes).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
  • Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) experience.
