Located in Bethpage, St. Joseph Hospital that provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient medical, critical care and surgical services. Its Emergency Department cares for approximately 33,000 patients a year. Other vital services include an Ambulatory Surgery Unit, The Center for Sleep Medicine, Hyperbaric and Wound Healing Center, CHS Cancer Center, The Center for Speech and Swallowing Disorders, Diabetes Education Center and a full scope of outpatient radiology services, including Cardiac CT.
We are looking for a Lead Phlebotomist to join our team!
General Statement of Duties:
- Ability to perform phlebotomy and assist in other laboratory function. Able to process specimens
- Able to operate Lab LIS and, handle all phone calls
- Performs phlebotomy on patients and follows established laboratory policy and technique, i.e. – courteous to patients, proper labeling and identification of patient, disposing of needles and exercising universal safety precautions.
- Capable of handling patients in the following categories: Adult 18-65 { }Geriatric 65 & Above { }All Age Groups
- Responds promptly to requests to perform phlebotomy within established acceptable time frame.
- Accessions test requests in LIS, reference lab systems.
- Assists in preparing samples for analysis – i.e.- centrifugation, bar coding, and distribution, process specimens
- Reviews request forms for completion and compliance.
- Prepares phlebotomy tray with blood collection items for use.
- Exhibits initiative to increase his/her knowledge through on the job training and in-service programs.
- Participates in Departmental Q.A. program.
- Deals with public i.e. – answering telephones, interaction with physicians’ offices, etc. in a courteous and professional manner.
- Correlates laboratory methods, procedures, and patient test results with age-specific population criteria and demonstrates appropriate understanding of the needs of patients and visitors for each specific age group. Addresses safety and psychological needs in planning or delivering care.
- Establishes and implements service priorities, workflow patterns; monitors workflow to assure prompt and efficient delivery of services.
- Demonstrates the ability to evaluate departmental performance and recommends measures to improve services and quality of current methodologies.
- Supervises and checks the work of staff.
- Assists in preparation of performance evaluations and competency assessments of staff.
- Provides leadership and direction in accordance with department goals and policies.
- Supports administrative decision and changes within the department.
- Participates in the orientation and training program of new employees or students from clinical affiliates.
- Reviews work performance of departmental employees and performs or assists in the performance appraisal process and competency assessments on a timely basis. Provides appropriate feedback of employee behavior and recognizes positive behavior.
- Combines information with ideas from department employees in order to solve problems creatively and communicates enthusiasm and commitment to co-workers for the common goal.
- Effective communicates the clarity of vision and goals by soliciting appropriate feedback. Supports administrative decision and changes within the department.
- Demonstrates quality leadership by developing standards of performance, areas responsible for accountability and delegation of authority to various support personnel.
- Assists in scheduling and finding coverage for schedule gaps.
- Performs competency assessments on other phlebotomists.
- Any other lead or phlebotomy tasks assigned by Supervisors, Manager or Directors.
EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent; Phlebotomy Certification desired
Licenses: BLS Certification
Experience: Prior hospital experience preferred.
