Job description
We are looking for a hard-working, dedicated person (preferably a paralegal) to fill the position of Legal Assistant at our firm. We are a firm of two full-time trial lawyers. The candidate hired will be the sole assistant at the firm. We practice primarily family and probate law - so tensions tend to run high. If you do not excel under pressure, this is not the job for you.
The ideal candidate must be efficient and work well with others, as dealing with clients, Courts, clerk's offices, and other law offices is a large part of the job. Further, an ideal candidate will also be good at organizing and multi-tasking. In a busy law office, things change in a matter of seconds, and our assistant must be able to navigate that.
In a litigation practice, there are many important deadlines that must be met. The candidate chosen to fill this position must meet deadlines imposed by statutes, local rules, or the attorneys. Failing to meet those deadlines can be detrimental to our clients' cases. If you struggle to stay on task and meet deadlines, this is not the job for you.
Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Speaking with clients: answering questions they may have, or passing along the question to the attorneys if necessary
- Scheduling for attorneys: this goes for hearings, mediations, in-person and phone meetings, along with other various events.
- Drafting: at times, an attorney may require you to draft a legal document, which he or she will review prior to filing.
- Time-keeping: while working on a case, the legal assistant should keep track or his or her time for billing purposes
- Filing: this includes paper filing for physical client files, as well as e-filing legal documents with the courts. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with the e-file system.
- Record keeping
- Corresponding with other law offices, Courts, clerk's offices, mediators about various issues
- Various administrative tasks, such as making deposits and paying bills
- Taking payments from clients
- Organizing discovery responses
- Staying on top of deadlines and ensuring that they are met
- Assisting attorneys in trial preparation
Hours are M-F 8:30-5:00 in Navasota. This is a salaried position and we have a generous paid holiday schedule.
