The Legal Assistant III performs advanced (senior-level) legal assistant work. Work involves coordinating legal activities; researching, analyzing, investigating, and drafting legal documents; and assisting attorneys with case management and maintaining case management system for the Texas Medicaid Third Party Recovery (TPR) case load and in partnership with the Texas Medicaid Health Partnership (TMHP). Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.






Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

Provides support to attorneys assigned to handle the Third Party Recovery case load in partnership with the Texas Medicaid Health Partnership (TMHP). Includes preparing referrals to the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) of lawsuits and other matters involving the agency; preparing, reviewing, and editing pleadings; assembling, organizing and preparing case files; calendaring, monitoring, and assisting attorneys in meeting deadlines; maintaining contact with TMHP and maintaining documents in electronic case files. (60%)

Enters accurate case information and other records in the Salesforce electronic case information system. (20%)

Uses word processing to prepare, revise, format and finalize a wide variety of documents in accordance within established timeframes. Reviews, edits and proofreads documents to ensure accuracy of spelling, grammar and legal citations. Routes document drafts to attorney for approval within established timeframes. (10%)

Provides records management support to the office of Chief Counsel staff; identifies, analyzes, and organizes records and archives; makes recommendations regarding appropriate disposition of records according to the approved HHSC records retention schedule; prepares reports, inventories, indexes, and aids to assist staff with accessing records. (10%)



Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of legal terminology; state and federal laws, rules, and regulations; research methods and techniques. Knowledge of the Texas Medicaid Third Party Recovery process and the Texas Medicaid Health Partnership (TMHP).

Skill in understanding and processing information, in the use of office equipment, and in the use of a computer and applicable software. Ability to conduct research; to draft, prepare, and interpret legal documents; to evaluate and relate findings to cases in question; to conduct investigations; to communicate effectively.

None


Initial Selection Criteria:
A paralegal degree or at least three years experience as a Legal Assistant. Experience in litigation is preferred. Experience with the Texas Medicaid Third Party Recovery process and the Texas Medicaid Health Partnership (TMHP) is preferred.
