Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America. Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities.

Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel.

Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.

Job Description

Position Summary:

The Manager, Marketing, Sale, Logistics will plan, lead, manage, develop and coordinate marketing strategies, by experiencing and understanding the global market of railroad operations. The Manager will work in the Company’s Burnham, PA office, with a travel expectation of approximately 25%.


Responsibilities:

  • Understand the overall business of customers, as it relates to sales, and execute the sales activity of products of made by Standard Steel and the Japanese parent company – Nippon Steel Corporation (“NSC”) to maximize profits in both the short and long term. The sales activity includes import, warehousing, and in-land logistics arrangements for NSC’s products.
  • Perform marketing/sales including logistics activities to actualize the higher value of our products by providing the best services to existing customers and maintain the strengthen partnership/relationships.
  • Collect and analyze the relative market, of both our customers and competitors, and make proposals to the Company as it relates to the direction we should be taking going forward.
  • Develop a budget, analyzing results and making specific sales and marketing activity reports (periodic and individual), consulting, and implementing based on the Plan - Do - Check - Action cycle.
  • Conduct research and analysis of marketing trends, making beneficial proposals to the Company and implement them on an approved schedule.
  • Evaluate and optimize marketing and pricing strategies.
  • Prepare forecast based on analyzation of market trends.
  • Increase brand awareness and market share.
  • Coordinate marketing strategies with the Sales, Traffic, Receiving, Technical, Maintenance, Finance, Procurement, and Production Departments.
  • Oversee branding, advertising, and promotional campaigns.
  • Prepare and present quarterly reports to senior management or directors.
  • Promote our brand at trade shows and major industry-related events.
  • Keep abreast of evolving marketing strategies and trends.
  • Evaluated on margin amount v. yearly budget; new business creation/customer diversification (quantitative and qualitative); strategic sales activity for long-term business enhancement.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 8 years of previous marketing and sales and domestic/international logistics experience required, preferably in the railway industry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Microsoft Office advanced user level of Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Microsoft Quick Books experience.
