Summary:

As the Manufacturing Specialist you will be working for JPL's Mechanical Fabrication and Test Section which maintains technical support facilities and resources that provide the services required to fabricate, assemble, and test electro-mechanical developmental and flight hardware. This Section develops and matures equipment and technologies, which enable and enhance our fabrication and environmental test capability for current and future missions.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform manufacturing engineering functions for the development of mechanical hardware.
  • Establish and maintain interfaces with multiple JPL customers.
  • Collaborate with cognizant engineers/customers on hardware design features to improve manufacturability.
  • Utilization of JPL’s Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) software for preplanning fabrication activities.
  • Support the process of locating, evaluating, and establishing new vendors as a laboratory resource in fabrication and supply chain.
  • Plan, initiate and monitor hardware fabrication activities.
  • Participate in "Make or Buy" decisions, interface with outside vendors.
  • Utilize multiple modules in the Oracle Discrete Manufacturing suite of programs, to develop the implementation plan, monitor the work, estimate WIP, monitor the technical progress of the work and resolve any technical, cost or schedule issues as they arise, capture build history and close process documentation.
  • Adhere to strict attendance guidelines.
  • Attend weekly Manufacturing Engineering group meetings.
  • Work with Cognizant Engineers in the development of precision hardware for an assortment of applications on various projects.
  • Perform Ad-hoc assignments as directed.

Requirements:

  • Bachelors with 1 year of related experience or Masters with 0 years of related experience
  • Must have spacecraft hardware development, manufacturing or assembly experience.
  • Must have ability to:
    • Evaluate the Design for Manufacturability (DFM) components and changes recommended.
    • Develop, maintain and prepare instructions and sequences for the fabrication and assembly of products
    • Sources and evaluates state-of-the-practice fab and assembly equipment
    • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and enable them to effectively deliver engineering planning, programing, fixture design and process manufacturing plans in a timely manner.
    • Ability to effectively interact with line and project management
    • Strong communication skills and ability to work with suppliers.
    • Experience in JPL policies and procedures, best practices, and methodologies related to the above core technical areas.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Develop estimating and planning that maximize manufacturing approaches for current in-house fabrication designs.
  • US Citizenship Required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in CNC programming utilizing state of the art CAM software, MasterCAM, NX, Esprit.
  • Solid Modeling
  • Experience in the following process improvement initiatives, Lean Manufacturing/ Kaizen/ Six Sigma/ 5-X.
  • Experience planning (storyboarding) and executing mechanical assembly activities.
  • Proven ability to take verbal and incomplete design elements and recommending to engineering personnel solutions for the manufacture and assembly of prototype hardware.
  • Highly energized, self-motivated, with the ability to work on several assignments that are complex in nature using considerable practical judgment.
