DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking an experienced and motivated Mechanical Engineer II to join our Baltimore, MD team. The Mechanical Engineer II shall be able to develop construction plans including HVAC and plumbing drawings and details, construction specifications, and cost estimates for a variety of new and renovation facility/building type projects. Experience with transportation infrastructure facilities, including airports, is a plus. Federal experience, particularly with the Department of Defense (DoD) is also a plus.

Design requirements will include all types of HVAC and plumbing systems. The selected candidate will work with the current Senior Mechanical staff and will work in multi-disciplinary, collaborative project design teams with architects, interior designers, civil engineers, and other building systems engineers.

The successful candidate is a responsible and accountable professional and will have creative solution-finding, organizational, and time management skills, a passion for solving complex design problems, a track record of producing projects on time and on budget, high standards for quality and performance, and thorough understanding of design and construction processes related to building and site mechanical design and engineering.

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Utilize AutoCAD and Revit software to perform engineering tasks and produce construction drawings. Prepare clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.
  • Plan and design HVAC and plumbing systems. Assist with the preparation of designs, design calculations, producing BIM models and construction drawings for a variety of clients.
  • Establish clear lines of communications within project team and with client for free flow of information.
  • Supervise and mentor junior personnel in the execution of projects.
  • Perform activities and produce documentation associated with design, construction, and contract documents, including products and systems research, code analysis, calculations, life cycle cost analysis, energy modeling, studies, field documentation, reports, drawings, specifications, and design analysis.
  • Prepare a written narrative as part of the project deliverables.
  • Research code, design, and detailed project specific requirements to ensure systems conform to engineering design and client specifications.
  • Check drawings (plans, details, etc.) to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards.
  • Review project instructions and requirements to provide possible redesign, substitution of materials, or rearrangement of systems for cost saving measures.
  • Review project requirements and specifications and confer with other disciplines and managers to determine assistance required in plan preparation, evaluation of project conditions, design changes, and reports.
  • Perform quality control procedures for work performed by others such as reviewing project deliverables prior to client submissions.
  • Direct and coordinate activities involved in design.
  • Perform design work under minimum supervision.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals, respond to RFI’s, and perform site visits as needed during the construction phase.
  • Evaluate field installations, review compliance, and recommend modifications as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation of scope of work and fee proposals. Calculate design costs. Be responsible for mechanical discipline project design budgets.
  • Front-facing to clients. Perform client and project needs assessments, determine and discuss potential solutions, and ensure satisfactory customer service. Also, attend project meetings to present design concepts and make adjustments to meet client requirements.
  • Prepare and present technical and program information to team members, management, and clients in a clear and logical manner.
  • Coordinate or perform field work to gather data and materials.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of government and industry design criteria and standards.
  • Create a good line of communication with both internal and external customers.
  • Maintain proficiency in computer software related to the practice of mechanical engineering.
  • Travel occasionally as required, for project meetings and on-site work.
  • Other duties as assigned

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a focus on Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 9+ years of related experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is required. Must be licensed in Maryland or have the ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity. LEED AP and/or GBI Guiding Principles Certification preferred. Additional certifications are a plus.
  • Experience in mechanical design for a variety of transportation infrastructure type projects. Airports and Federal, particularly Department of Defense (DoD) experience is a plus.
  • Engineering software experience (Revit, BIM, AutoCad Civil 3D).
  • Knowledge of Trane Trace 3D Plus or other HVAC load calculation software.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively on all levels both visually and verbally with team members, customers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Ability to conceptualize and think creatively.
  • Ability to apply effective use of project contingencies, both budgets and schedules.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and to research and troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Ability to manage working on multiple projects and meet deliverable deadlines.
  • Complete work in efficient and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to properly address and manage change.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Possess a proficient understanding of inter-relationships among design and engineering disciplines, clients, and contractors.
  • Knowledge of Bluebeam, Microsoft Office, and Sharepoint.
  • Knowledge of government, client, and industry local codes, regulations, and standards governing design and construction projects. Knowledge of FAA ACs and/or UFCs is a plus.
  • Knowledge of fire protection design is a plus.

COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $90,848 - $208,178. This will be dependent on the experience and expertise of the incoming candidate.
