Division Overview:

Montana’s Division of Criminal Investigation is a diverse public safety team of professionals who provide a full range of criminal investigative services to state, local, and tribal law enforcement. From homicide investigations to illegal narcotics, criminal records, cybercrime, human trafficking, missing persons, or through training and certifying public safety officers, DCI serves as the hub in providing critical law enforcement support. Our diverse customer base includes protecting our vulnerable population, managing the sexual and violent offender registry, serving as the hub of communication for criminal justice information networks and the storage of criminal records, conducting arson investigations, as well as providing intelligence analysis support for local law enforcement. Many of our positions within DCI go without public recognition but remain the lifeline of support for public safety. Job Overview:

The Montana Missing Person Specialist will serve as a central point of contact for support of families of missing persons. This position will also work closely with local, state, federal and tribal law enforcement, providing information on resources, facilitating training, and verifying missing persons are entered in state and national missing person databases. This position is not a sworn investigator position. Rather this position works as a liaison between families and law enforcement when needed, and will manage Montana’s Missing Persons website, as well as assist with launching AMBER Alerts and Missing Endangered Person Advisories.

An important duty of this position will be effective communication, including public outreach and education on everything related to missing persons (i.e. Montana’s AMBER Alert program and child abduction prevention). This position will be located in Helena, however extensive in-state travel will be required. This position will also have some after-hours, on-call responsibilities. Individuals with experience in missing person cases or trauma-informed advocacy care are encouraged to apply.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, communication, social services, or related field;
  • Two or more years of relevant work experience;
  • Technical skills with computers, publication software, database management, and basic networking technology;
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • The incumbent must become CJIN certified within six months of hire and attend cultural competency training.

  • CJIN certified
