The OR Nurse performs various clinical activities in the operating room and collaborates with other clinical personnel to prepare the operating room for surgery.
Responsibilities
- Respond to direction and requests from the practitioner, anesthesia personnel and other clinical personnel.
- Participate in preparing supplies, suture and other items needed for dental and surgical procedures.
- Collaborate with other clinical personnel in preparing the OR for cases.
- Verify patient identification in the OR.
- Maintain a sterile field as appropriate.
- Prepare solutions and other items used during dental/surgical procedures.
- Perform appropriate counts with the Technician or nurse as appropriate.
- Prepare surgical specimens and associated documentation for pick-up by pathology service.
- Collaborate with Central Processing personnel to clean and sterilize instruments.
- Notify the Director of Nursing of supply needs, instruments that need repair and/or other problems with equipment or supplies.
- Maintain knowledge for safe and effective use of various pieces of equipment used in the OR, including, but not limited to: pulse oximeter, OR tables, sterilizers, cardiac monitors and defibrillator.
- Record changes on the practitioner’s preference card.
- Maintain accurate, complete medical record documents as they apply to intraoperative care; use and enter data in the Center’s information system.
- Inspect and rotate sterile supplies.
- Clean and stock the OR as necessary
- Use supplies in a cost effective manner.
- Serve on Center committees as requested by the Director of Nursing.
- Exhibit a professional and courteous approach to all patients, practitioners, colleagues and visitors.
- Adhere to all Center policies, including, without limitation, those regarding HIPAA (patient privacy) and the Patient Safety Act.
- Respond to Center emergencies as appropriate.
- Participate in training new OR personnel.
- Arrive for duty promptly.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
Other Qualifications and Considerations:
High school diploma.
- Occasional need to lift heavy objects or assist in lifting patients; extended periods of standing and/or walking; need to twist, push and reach for light to heavy objects.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with all Center staff.
- Current Pennsylvania nursing license.
- BLS and/or ACLS certification as required by Director of Nursing.
- Potential exposure to disruptive or uncontrollable patients or visitors.
- Handle potentially dangerous materials.
- May require unanticipated need to work beyond scheduled shift due to patient care needs.
- Ability to take initiative and act independently.
High school diploma.
- Graduate of accredited nursing program.
- OR experience, preferably in an ambulatory setting.
