JOB DESCRIPTION- Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Position Description: (Summarize the essential functions of the job.)
Staff will have daily contact with Residence Manager and individuals. Residence Manager will provide supervision and individuals will receive care and supervision. Regular contact will occur with service providers in the community, as well as, school, day program and transportation staff.
-Ensure appropriate supervision, health and safety of individuals; Implement Individual Plan of Protective Oversight.
-Advocate for individuals in the community (medical appointments, church, recreation activities etc).
-Ensure individual’s plan of care is implemented.
-Ensure that individual medication is administered as prescribed.
-Assist in daily living skills (e.g. personal hygiene, food preparation, house keeping, laundry, shopping)
-Maintain facility in compliance with the OPWDD and COA standards.
-Facilitate individual’s learning and skill training in fire safety.
-Implementation and documentation of individual’s goals.
-Complete daily progress notes and other individual logs.
-Maintain updated certifications in CPR/first aid, SCIP, and AMAP.
-Provide atmosphere conducive to positive behavior.
-Observe, report regressive and unusual behavior and work cooperatively with clinical staff.
-Planning and preparing balanced meals.
-Cleaning and maintaining of the residential unit.
-Assist individuals with the purchase of groceries, clothing, hygiene supplies and other items needed.
-Attends appropriate workshops, trainings, and meetings.
-Assist in providing spiritual development.
-Assist in providing ethical and moral values.
-Transport and escort individuals on recreational activities, medical appointment, home visits, etc
-Assist in development of social skills.
-Remain on shift until your relief has arrived.
-Complete job related tasks as needed.

Other Requirements:
AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid Certifications preferred.
Valid NY, NJ, CT or PA driver’s license with 6 points or less
Experience working with adults that have developmental disabilities.

Day Habilitation Specialists Functions:
Under the supervision of the Day Habilitation Manager of NYF Day Habilitation Services, the Day Habilitation Specialists is responsible for the following:

A. Program

• Disability Specialist displays a congenial, warm acceptance for all consumers.
• They interact constantly with the consumers to develop a sense of security and belonging.
• Is responsible for the care and supervision of the consumers visiting the particular program assigned.
• Interprets the Agency policies and program to the consumer, other Day Habilitation Specialist and the community.
• Is alert to the expressions of attitudes, feelings and relationships of each consumer. Develops an awareness of the individual consumer’s needs, not only through the observation and interaction of everyday living but, also through a study of the consumer’s case history and by appropriate consultation with other members of the staff.
• S/he keeps a record of pertinent observations and impressions about the group and the individual's behavior.
• Attempts to form a meaningful relationship with each consumer in the group. S/he helps each consumer make the most of his stay in direct care.
• Is responsible for matters of everyday living concerning personal cleanliness of the consumer, and care and cleanliness of the program area, furniture, supplies and habilitation activities.
• Day Habilitation Specialist attend supervision and training as required.
• It is essential that Day Habilitation Specialist provide a solid program of constructive and interesting activities for the consumers.
• It is essential that Day Habilitation Specialist know and protect consumer’s rights.
• Close supervision of the consumers is a vital part of the Day Habilitation Specialists 'responsibilities.
• Day Habilitation Specialist must maintain control of the consumers within the program in a discreet and non-threatening manner.
• Finally, Day Habilitation Specialist must keep accurate records, pertaining to the day-to-day operation of the Day Habilitation program. Be sure to record and report any unusual or bizarre behaviors or incidents.
• Day Habilitation Specialist are required to have a high school diploma or GED and prior experience with OMRDD consumers preferred.

B. Reporting Relationships

• Reports directly to Day Habilitation Manager or director for bi-weekly supervision.
