Job description
Tyto Athene is seeking a certified and/or experienced Optical Network Technician who will be responsible for installing, provisioning, and monitoring equipment and circuits associated with Ciena SONET and DWDM optical network product line for the Department of Energy.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of all transport equipment associated with the telecommunications infrastructure at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This includes Ciena 3500 SONET, 5200 WDM, 6500 DWDM, and service delivery and aggregation switches.
- Responsible for the installation of fiber optic, 2-wire, 4-wire and point-to-point, T-1, DS3, and Ethernet circuits.
- Responsible for the installation, operation, and maintenance of channel banks, channel service units (CSU), digital service units (DSU) and other circuits.
- Configure, install, service and maintain core switches, routers, SONET transport, DWDM and other related equipment necessary for the delivery T1, DS3, Ethernet, and special circuits services throughout the INL optical network infrastructure. This includes all equipment, both active and passive, between the core network and customer-facing ports.
- Ensure all fibers, copper, and other connections are properly installed, tagged and identified and that these connections have the proper physical support such as fiber duct, spiral wrap and strand relief supports. Ensure all equipment is mounted in such a way as to ensure network reliability.
- Document that all equipment alarm points are being properly monitored and circuit design records are complete and accurate. This includes both creating circuit design records when needed as well as ensuring they are updated for an as built or service restoration changes.
- Assist with the installation, service and maintenance of customer premise equipment and last mile fiber circuits as necessary and directed.
- As part of an on-call/standby rotation, respond to after-hours call-out for service restoration, troubleshooting, network testing and repair of all last core switches, routers, SONET and DWDM transport equipment and other related equipment necessary for the delivery of T1, DS3, Ethernet, and special circuits services throughout the INL optical network infrastructure.
- Also assist OEM Network Engineers in troubleshooting, testing and repair of all core switches, routers, SONET and DWDM Transport equipment and other related equipment as necessary and directed.
- Maintain all spare stock for all core switches, routers, SONET and DWDM equipment and other related equipment necessary. Track all equipment RMAs and ensure the proper levels of spares inventory is maintained.
- System status checks and reports.
- Maintain INL -48V DC power distribution system.
- Terminate CAT3, CAT5, CAT5e, CAT6A, and fiber optic cable as needed.
- Assist other sections of the INL Tyto Athene Team as needed to perform telecommunications installations and repairs.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years relevant experience plus electronics training on the Ciena OM3500, Ciena OM5200, Ciena OME6500 SONET and DWDM nodes as well as Channel Bank, Multiplexer, and experience in LAN/WAN operations and TCP/IP.
- Working knowledge and experienced application skills for telephony and telecommunications circuitry, networking, Ethernet, Optical Transport Networks, SONET, LAN/WAN management, and data/voice communications products.
- Capable of working effectively with co-workers and fulfill customer requests.
- Strong computer skills with emphasis on applications are required.
- Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to work extremely flexible/extended hours to support heavy workload, on-call duties, and communications service interruptions as required to possibly include holidays.
- Ability to concisely and effectively communicate and present complex technical information to a varied audience, including technical and non-technical customer representatives.
- Effective time management to allow for involvement in special task order projects as assigned by the supervisor.
- Perform his/her duties with minimum supervision and participate in cross-functional projects as scheduled.
- Fostering of excellent relations with the Customer and the Team on behalf of Tyto Athene.
- Follow established guidelines set forth by the Customer, Tyto Athene, and the supervisor for conduct and work performance.
- Isolate system problems and malfunctions; take timely corrective action to meet conditions of the contract.
- Must be a US citizen.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- The ability to pass a background check and obtain a Department of Energy security clearance is required.
- Ciena 6500 Grid Broadband and Photonic Layer training.
- Ciena Service Aware Operating System (SAOS) 6 training.
