Job description
Nature of Work:
Under general direction, supervises the operation and maintenance of parks, railroad museum, amusement rides, park zoo, cemetery, and other City grounds; performs duties of sexton.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Supervises the maintenance and repair of park and cemetery buildings and grounds and other public areas; plans, schedules and supervises the maintenance and repair of fences, parks, recreation areas, playground equipment, camp grounds and sprinkler systems.
- Serves as cemetery sexton; sells lots, prepares deeds; prepares and maintains cemetery records, plots and maps; locates burials; coordinates with funeral directors in scheduling funerals.
- Plans and carries out a program of tree pruning and care, seeding, fertilizing, watering, mowing, spraying and snow removal; supervises maintenance of ice skating and fishing ponds.
- Oversees operations; preplans and assigns work crews for most effective and efficient operation; trains subordinates in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Responds to after hours call.
- Purchases supplies and equipment; plans and lays out landscape and turf areas, watering and irrigation systems and ball fields, tennis courts and other recreational fields.
- Assists the Director of Park and Recreation in long range planning and budget preparation.
- Performs other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.
Desirable Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
- Thorough knowledge of horticulture and effective ground maintenance practices.
- Thorough knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and building generally used in parks and cemeteries.
- Working knowledge of animal husbandry.
- Some knowledge of modern budgetary and purchasing procedures.
- Ability to effectively supervise unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled personnel.
- Ability to prepare concise operating reports.
- Ability to work with persons under stress.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, funeral directors, officials and the public.
Experience and Training:
- Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school plus three years of experience in park and/or cemetery, maintenance, including one year in a supervisory capacity; a two year Associate Degree in Landscaping or a related field is desirable.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License as required by the State of Nebraska; certification as a Herbicide and Pesticide Applicator within six months of appointment.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $29.27 - $40.18 per hour
