Job Responsibilities:
- The Peer Specialist (PS) is considered an essential, non-clinical member of the clinical care team that supports a harm reduction model.
- The PS will provide community outreach and peer recovery support services to adult patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) and will assist patients in achieving sustained recovery as defined by each individual patient.
- The position will facilitate patient access to recovery-oriented SUD treatment, related resources, and community recovery groups.
- The PS will bridge the segmented treatment system into a more holistic care model by providing support across multiple systems and frameworks of care.
- The PS will maintain ongoing patient support regardless of relapse and will serve as a motivator, ally, role model, problem-solver, and advocate for patients.
- The PS should possess a thorough understanding of the steps to successful recovery, understanding of community culture to address the barriers to successful recovery, provide links to community resources, and to use straightforward, recovery-focused language free from clinical jargon.
- This position requires good organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Regularly scheduled supervision may be shared with other health centers and nearby institutions. Flexible schedule and hybrid schedule may be available following introductory period.
- May provide some backup coverage for East Boston location.
Education:
- A High School diploma or GED required
Experience:
- Bilingual in Spanish and English strongly preferred
- Lived experience with substance use disorders, with at least two-years sustained recovery.
- Successful completion of a CCAR approved Recovery Coach Academy before hire, or the successful completion of a CCAR approved Recovery Coach Academy within 4 months of hire.
- Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) certification required within first 12 months of employment
Skills/Abilities:
- Strong advocacy skills along with knowledge of community-based services, resources, and local recovery community
- Empathic understanding of patients, including the ability to assess multicultural needs, sensitivity to ethnic, cultural, gender, and sexual orientation diversity, values, beliefs, and behaviors
- Demonstrated flexibility with client’s priorities, evolving needs, and goals
- inclusive of organizational skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, and the internet; requires the ability to research community resources independently and to access and enter data
