Overview:
The successful candidate will repair, rebuild, lay-out and fabricate metal parts, shapes and objects for all mechanical and electrical equipment, facilities and devices requiring the use of arc or gas welding processes necessary to maintain safe, continuous and efficient operation. Repair, adjust, rebuild and service all mechanical equipment, and facilities necessary to maintain safe, continuous and efficient operation of a power plant.

Hours:
M-F 6:00 am - 2:30 pm

This is a bargaining union position and a member of the Local IBEW #1400
. HR13/U13 hourly rate is $33.35 per hour.

Responsibilities:
  • Pressure welding on piping requiring the passing of performance qualification tests as established by the Thermal Division procedures which are in compliance with “ASME Power Piping B 31.1” requirements as governed by section IX.
  • Burning, fusing, aligning, placing, repairing, chipping, cleaning, preparing, and installing metal parts, shapes, pipe and objects requiring the use of arc, gas tig or mig welding processes; setting up and laying out metal plates, shapes, pipe and objects preparatory to welding; preheating according to established standards to prevent stresses that would otherwise accumulate during the welding operation; post heating according to established standards to relieve residual stresses due to the welding operation.
  • Cutting metals with oxy-acetylene, plasma or arc welding equipment.
  • Selecting the proper weld rod and flux for the metal to be welded; working from blueprints, sketches, field measurements and specifications; duplicating and building up parts, shapes and objects; being familiar with the properties of various metals.
  • Operating numerous types of power and hand tools including, but not limited to, saws, grinders, shears, brakes and hydraulic or pneumatic equipment.
  • Fitting, connecting, repairing or overhauling of all mechanical equipment and facilities requiring the use of scales, gauges and the reading of blueprints.
  • Rigging, building scaffolding and directing crane operations, as required.
  • Inspecting, dismantling, installing, replacing, cleaning, lubricating, packing, drilling, grinding, sawing, drilling, removing and setting all mechanical equipment and facilities.
  • Removing, repairing, replacing and installing heat insulating materials on piping and equipment.
  • Preparing, painting and stenciling internal or external surfaces of tanks, pipes, structures, walls, floors, equipment and other surfaces.
  • Operating all types of stationary and mobile equipment such as cranes, hoists and trucks in and around the power plant.
  • Keeping work areas in good order and cleaning up after completion of work.
  • Performing general mechanical maintenance, construction and other related work, when not welding, as assigned.
  • Assist isolating plant equipment for repairs as requested.
  • Perform housekeeping as assigned.
  • Confined space entry is required, as circumstances require.
  • In addition to the primary duties listed above, the employee may be called upon to perform other work, as circumstances require. Must be able to work overtime, as circumstances require. Must know and comply with all Company safety and health policies and procedures applicable to work performance.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Generally, indoor work in plant atmosphere of heat, dirt, noise and fumes as well as outdoor work in various types of weather.
Qualifications:
  • Must possess high school diploma or equivalent, and preferably supplemented by courses in practical mechanics, mechanical maintenance and welding layout/metal fabrication associated with the welding trade or must have earned welding school certificate.
  • 5 years’ experience in welding and layout/fabrication repair work.
  • Must pass the Thermal Division welding certification test, with a maximum of three attempts.
  • Must have a thorough working knowledge of and demonstrate a high degree proficiency in oxy-cetylene welding, arc welding, tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, metal inert gas (MIG) welding, soldering, brazing, and plasma cutting.
  • Previous general maintenance experience including pumps, gearbox, and valve repair is preferred
