WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER


Reporting to an Associate General Counsel, the Privacy and Data Security Senior Counsel will be responsible for developing, implementing, and executing the compliance program for privacy and data security for the organization to meet global privacy regulations. The Privacy and Data Security Senior Counsel provides legal advice and direction on very complex matters related to privacy and data security. They will apply highly developed analytical and risk management skills to serve organizational needs efficiently and effectively. They must clearly articulate complex legal concepts and options to project managers, high-level managers, and the Board of Directors. Additionally, the Privacy and Data Security Senior Counsel ensures that transactions and activities are legally sound and consistent with the Conservancy’s mission, authority, policies, and procedures. The Privacy and Data Security Senior Counsel also directs the day-to-day operations of the global privacy program, including program objectives, policies, procedures, training, and communication. The Privacy and Data Security Senior Counsel will serve as an organizational resource for information and guidance on privacy and the protection of personal data and will leverage constructive and effective relationships with a wide variety of staff, including senior management.

WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU


We are a global conservation organization looking for a skilled attorney to drive a cross-functional team in developing and implementing our privacy and data protection program initiatives. As a Senior Counsel, you will provide high value legal services on complex matters around the world to advance TNC’s priorities and appropriately manage risk. We are seeking a motivated counselor capable of working independently and with senior leaders providing high value legal services in a fast-paced environment. Your portfolio could include leading an organization-wide risk assessment process to identify potential privacy risks and control solutions, being a key partner in incident response, maintaining the global privacy program, and providing high-level legal advice on privacy and data security to all functions of the organization including Development, IT, Marketing, Legal, the People Team, and more.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent and license to practice law in at least one jurisdiction
  • 7 years relevant legal experience
  • Substantive privacy, data security and related experience, supporting a robust global privacy program within a corporate, law firm, or government environment
  • Substantive knowledge and experience developing, implementing, and maintaining corporate or nonprofit privacy policies, procedures, and infrastructures
  • Experience developing, directing, and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals
  • Proactive, team-oriented approach with the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively
  • Experience negotiating complex, sensitive or high-profile transactions and agreements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated
  • CIPP or similar certification preferred
