Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Created in 2012, the Carolina Higher Education Opportunity Programs (CHEOP) office Comprises the NC Health Careers Access Program (NC-HCAP) and TRiO Programs (Upward Bound Program and the McNair Scholars Program).
Through both NC-HCAP and TRiO Programs, CHEOP Promotes and Maintains Programs, Activities, and Services that Facilitate Access to College, Graduate and Ph.D. Programs, as well as Health Professional Schools for Individuals from Historically Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups, First Generation Status, Rural and/or Low- Income Backgrounds. The Programs under CHEOP Enhance Participants’ Academic Performance, Retention, and Personal and Professional Development to Promote Graduation in Secondary and Post-Secondary Education.

Position Summary
Held each summer on the UNC Chapel Hill campus, the Science Enrichment Preparation (S.E.P.) Program is an eight-week, honors-level academic enrichment program that targets first-generation, underrepresented minority, rural, and/or socioeconomically disadvantaged undergraduate students (rising sophomores and juniors) who seek admission into graduate/health professional programs.

S.E.P. Scholars receive free educational supplies, lodging on the UNC Chapel Hill campus, and a competitive stipend of $2,000. During the Program, S.E.P. Scholars engage in more than 150 hours of classroom instruction in Physics, Organic Chemistry, Human Physiology and Quantitative Skills/Biostatistics. Attend classes and seminars in reading speed and comprehension, test-taking strategies via Princeton Review or Kaplan, essay writing, and interview techniques. Visit local health facilities and network with health care professionals. Additionally, they shadow health professionals in their area of interest.

S.E.P. program assistants will be responsible for assisting in conducting classroom session hours over the course of 8 weeks, design and select educational materials to meet programmatic goals, and provide students with session materials.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Must successfully complete a background check.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Previous teaching experience is preferred.

Prefer degree in science or health professional program/profession.
