Job Description

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) is a Registered Nurse who through additional extensive education and training, practices in collaboration with and interdependently with a surgeon licensed in the Commonwealth, in providing an optimal perioperative experience for the patient. Current Massachusetts registered nurse license in addition to documented competency in perioperative nursing practice is required. The RNFA may provide direct patient care as a circulator RN, or assume the scrub role or the RNFA role. The RNFA shall not concurrently function as a scrub nurse. The RNFA assesses patients' condition, performs treatments, administers medications, observes patient's progress, documents responses to interventions and evaluates therapies for clinical outcomes and effectiveness. Coordinates nursing care, assists in Surgical Services procedures and related services within the Surgical Services Unit. Works collaboratively with all members of the health care team, the patient and the patient's family. Practices in accordance with Hallmark Health's policies and procedures, the scope of practice for registered nurses in Massachusetts and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing Advisory Ruling 'Registered Nurses as First Assistants at Surgery' and AORN position statement on RN First Assistants.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Registration and current RN licensure in good standing required. Completion of RNFA program, a post-basic nursing education program whose intent is the preparation of registered nurses to practice as first assistants at surgery. BLS required ACLS preferred and CNOR required. RNFA certification preferred.

• EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of two years of surgical services experience.

• SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work with detailed, confidential material, computer experience required.
