DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
GBH News is Boston’s only fully-integrated local public media entity with Television, Radio, and Digital all working in one newsroom. Our daily goal is to go beyond the headlines, examine the deeper topics and themes, and add context and perspective to the news. WGBH 89.7 FM broadcasts local, national, and international news and talk shows all day from 5AM to 8PM. GBH News team covers and produces local and national news including in-depth feature stories and interviews, covering a wide range of topics.
Boston Public Radio, hosted by Jim Braude and Margery Eagan, is GBH’s midday talk show, featuring smart local conversation with leaders and thinkers shaping greater Boston: on-air, online, and in-person.

JOB OVERVIEW
The Production Assistant for Boston Public Radio is a key role on our flagship talk show and reports to the Executive Producer, working closely with the rest of the production team and with hosts Jim Braude and Margery Eagan. The position requires excellent written and audio production skills, the ability to research topics and potential guests, screen calls and monitor text messages and social media platforms, and the ability to work closely with a small team and within a larger newsroom and foundation, cooperatively and calmly under deadline pressure.
The Production Assistant supports the work of producing a live, 3-hour radio talk show at GBH’s flagship studio in Brighton and our Boston Public Library studio, preparing the hosts, writing web content for GBHNews.org. In addition, the PA will help the show expand its reach on social media and digital platforms, as well write stories for GBHNews.org, after BPR’s daily production. And other duties as assigned.
The shift will be 8:00 AM– 4:00 PM Monday – Friday, and occasionally some hours on Sunday. Hours may differ in the event of breaking news.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in deciding on topics and guests and booking, as needed
  • Conduct research for the show, most often on tight deadlines
  • Quickly and accurately pull audio clips for use in the show
  • Work with the Executive Producer to provide hosts with detailed research
  • Fact-check information by phone and other sources
  • Screen calls, texts, and social media during the show
  • Write and publish quality digital content on deadline
  • Other duties as assigned
SKILL SET
  • Must be a voracious consumer of news, a self-starter who is able to work collaboratively with a fast-paced, nimble staff.
  • Excellent verbal communication and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines; ability to be flexible as news breaks or show rundowns change.
  • Must be able to perform in-depth research on a variety of topics, national and local, and needs to be familiar with the local issues facing greater Boston.
  • Positive attitude, ability to work with hosts and other producers in a team environment
  • Excellent computer skills, including recording devices and technology, specifically experience with audio editing/recording software is required.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated a strong understanding of strict journalistic principles and have proven ability to present detailed research, strong editorial judgment, fairness and fidelity to facts

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience. The ideal candidate will have at least 1-2 years of experience in journalism.
