The Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of a Recreation & Athletics Specialist 3 at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington.

The Department of Corrections (DOC), as a partner in the criminal justice system, enhances public safety, administers criminal sanctions and programs in accordance with the law and provides leadership for the future of corrections in Washington State.

The Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) is comprised of 3 Close Custody Units, 3 Special Housing Units, 2 Intensive Management Units, 2 Medium Units, 2 Minimum Housing Units and a Hospital. In all, WSP houses approximately 2,000 offenders and employs approximately 1,000 staff.

Whether the work is inside a prison, in community corrections, or in an administrative office, the Washington State Department of Corrections professional staff experience a high degree of personal satisfaction knowing they are creating environments in which all offenders can learn to make choices that contribute to a safer society.

Duties

Plans and carries out leisure, social and modified recreational activities to include, wellness, barbershop, other supervised recreational activities, and assists with in-cell curio for offenders. To include seriously mentally ill and protective custody in the Specialized Housing Units.
  • Develops recreational activities,( leisure and social) to include all levels of fitness, interest, and limitations (to include mental/physical limitations) that falls under DOC and WSP 540.105 policy.
  • Assist living units on the processing of the in-cell curio program per DOC 540.105
  • Confers with clinical and other staff members to determine recreation programs for individuals or groups.
Oversees the safety and security practices of recreation equipment, building and yard.
  • Work alongside the tool sergeant, custody staff and Recreation Athletic Supervisor 4 to ensure all security policies and procedures are followed in the recreation center, gym, yard, and weight pile.
  • Performs security, safety and sanitation, tool and equipment checks
  • Issues tools/equipment per (WSP 420.500)
  • Issues and maintains chemicals per (WSP 890.030)
  • Maintains accurate records of all tools and chemicals used in recreation/ safety and sanitation, daily equipment accountability forms.
Responsible for recruitment, screening, placement and payment of an offender work crew in accordance to the job assignment process.
  • Screens offender eligi bility through job assignments and develops a training program for all job activities. Keeps offender work records and files.
  • Screens offenders to ensure workers and sports officials are cross quad approved; ability to work with all offenders in the close custody groups/specialized housing according to the job assignment process
Maintain accurate call outs and rosters for offender participants and responds to paper kites and CePrison kiosk messages.
  • Updating morning exercise class lists and setting the callout schedule. Ensuring there are no schedule conflicts with other programs.
  • Respond in a timely manner to paper kites and CePrison kiosk messages.

Qualifications

Preferred:

A Bachelor's degree involving major study in either (a) recreation or therapeutic recreation*, (b) music, drama, or physical education, or (c) psychology, sociology, or education with a minor in recreation, physical education, music, or drama and two years of paid, professional recreation experience.



OR


One year of experience as a Recreation and Athletics Specialist 2.


  • Note: Therapeutic recreation includes providing individualized assessments and treatment which are goal-oriented and directed towards rehabilitation and modification of specific physical, emotional, mental or social behaviors.

OR

Experience and/or knowledge of several fields of recreational activities, including specialized knowledge in at least two broad areas, such as sports, music, social activities, and or hobby crafts.
  • Ability to plan, organize and lead institution recreation programs; adapt recreation policies, methods, and techniques to specific operational situations.
  • Supervise and train league officials, fitness instructors, and other recreation related duties.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees.
  • Establish and maintain effective records and reporting systems. '
  • Understand and apply DOC policies and procedures relative to the program area and specific job duties.
