Position Summary
The Research Scientist will contribute their expertise to multiple research projects in Biomedical Informatics and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML). This includes keeping current in literature in Biomedical Informatics with an emphasis on AI/ML applied to health data, assisting in proposal, paper, and presentation development in those areas. This position will mentor and assist graduate and undergraduate students working on RENCI research projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Leadership experience in Data Science and application of AI methods to problems in health and transportation.
- Team science experience working with multiple stakeholders and collaborators including those from federal funding agencies.
- Specialized knowledge of a science discipline and experience working on data science projects.
- Experience developing cloud computing systems for machine learning and AI.
- Experience developing AI solutions for scientific problems.
- Ability to oversee and manage multiple research projects at the same time.
- Experience with data science workflows and agile software development practices.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, R or MatLab.
- Excellent communication skills including presentations to diverse constituencies, strong interpersonal communication and human relations abilities.
- Ability to communicate technical/scientific concepts to non-technical/non-scientific audiences.
- Ability to write proposals and publications.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Ph.D. Degree in a STEM discipline.
- Management, administrative, and communications skills through the use of GitHub, Slack, etc.
- Ability to manage the project’s scope, deliverables, risks.
- Strong teamwork skills.
- Evidence of working with interdisciplinary teams.
- Strong familiarity with the academic (UNC) environment, including working with students.
