THIS POSITION PROVIDES DIRECT CARE FOR DEAF, HEARING IMPAIRED, &/OR VISUALLY IMPAIRED STUDENTS IN A RESIDENTIAL ENVIRONMENT.

The Louisiana Schools for the Deaf and Visually Impaired (LSDVI) includes two Louisiana
Special Schools (LSS) recognized as elementary and secondary school systems. Both schools occupy the same campus servicing students throughout the state who are deaf, hard of hear hearing and/or visually impaired. LSDVI operates seven days a week 24 hours a day on 116 acres and includes 22 building with 486,029 square feet under roof.

Physical Activity Level- 3: Work requires moderate effort for such activities as bending, stretching, stooping walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces, or lifting thirty or forty pounds. Work may require brief periods in which heavy muscular exertion is required.

Preference may be given to applicants knowing American Sign Language and/or Braille.

LSDVI offers a special entrance rates (SER) for Residential Advisor jobs are as follows:
Residential Advisor 1 SS 404 $ 790.80 biweekly
Residential Advisor 2 SS 405 $ 846.00 biweekly
Residential Advisor 3 SS 406 $ 905.20 biweekly

Depending on which school a Residential Advisor position is with (LSD/LSVI) work days and hours may vary due to the assistance needed. The standard shifts typically available for the Residential Advisor position are as follows:

Monday to Friday, Evening 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM, 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM, or 4:00 PM - 12:00 AM
Sunday to Thursday, Evening 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM, 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM, or 4:00 PM - 12:00AM
Monday to Friday, Overnight 12:00 AM - 8:00 AM
(LSVI)
Sunday, Evening 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM or 6:00 PM - 12:00 AM
Monday to Thursday, Evening 4:30 PM - 12:00 AM or 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM
Monday to Friday, Overnight 12:00 AM - 8:00 AM
All times subject to vary due to occasional overtime requirements

The maximum salary for the Residential Advisor 3 is $40,768.00 . Direct supervision from Residential Advisor Supervisor or Residential Team Leader or other professional staff member.

Location of Work:
Louisiana School for the Deaf and Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Residential Advisor 2 by lack of appropriate rating level on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SPCI) or in Braille proficiency and by the lack of journeyman level duties.

Examples of Work

AS A TRAINEE WORKING DAY AND AFTERNOON SHIFTS:
Teaches basic self-help and self-care skills related to independent living and social skill development (includes personal hygiene, household management, time management, social skills, physical/emotional fitness, and intellectual/study skills).

Assists and/or supervises bathing, cleaning, dressing, feeding, putting to bed, and maintains constant vigil over multi-disabled students as appropriate.

Accompanies students to and from the cafeteria for meals; provides supervision during meals; may escort students from school to the dormitory.

May chaperone or transport students to off-campus activities such as field trips, athletic events, shopping, medical appointments, and to and from home.

Assists other staff in instructing students involved in learning activities such as life skills, homework, etc.

Observes behavior of students and reports sudden or unusual changes to higher authority.

Monitors living areas/dormitory to maintain custody control and to prevent trespassing; maintains appropriate reports.

Reports to higher authority when appropriate, accidents/incidents and suspected cases of abuse or neglect of students.

Maintains records such as the daily reports, incident reports, and bed checklist for assigned shift/dormitory.

Receives telephone calls and mail for students and delivers such communications when appropriate.

AS A TRAINEE WORKING THE NIGHT SHIFT:
Assists students with basic self-help and self-care skills related to independent living and social skill development (includes personal hygiene, household management, time management, social skills, physical/emotional fitness, and intellectual/study skills).

Assists and/or supervises bathing, cleaning, dressing, feeding, putting to bed, and maintains constant vigil over multi-disabled students as appropriate.

Documents bed checks of students at no more than 15-30 minute intervals by checking each room and observing/noting student activity; completes appropriate reports

Accompanies students to and from the cafeteria for breakfast; provides supervision during the meal; may assist with feeding; escorts students to school.

May chaperone or transport students to and from home.

Observes behavior of students and reports sudden or unusual changes to higher authority.

Monitors living areas/dormitory to maintain custody control and to prevent trespassing; maintains appropriate records.

Reports to higher authority when appropriate, accidents/incidents and suspected cases of abuse or neglect of students.

Maintains records such as the daily reports, incident reports, etc. for assigned dormitory.
