Sawyer/Nailer (Sawman)
Duties:
1. Operate radial table or band saw to cut lumber to proper lengths to make a variety of boxes, trusses, skids, and similar items following prepared list or requirements.
2. Work from list of daily requirements showing type of shipping container and pertinent dimensions. Obtain lumber from storage areas and saw all parts to proper lengths, allowing for lumber thicknesses, when necessary, to obtain proper inside dimensions for container. Mark order number, container size, and other required data on end piece, and arrange parts for assembly by nailers.
3. Work involves following in proper sequence a list of daily production requirements to supply a number of various shipping containers. Operate power saws, change blades, set stops, and saw material to correct sizes and lengths using established procedures.
4. Assemble and nail precut lumber to make boxes, trusses, skids, and similar items following prescribed procedures.
5. Receive lumber sawed to required lengths and marked for size and type of item. Assemble and nail as required using proper size and type of nails. Apply designated paper or similar packing or protective material when designated. Use hammer, power nailer and similar tools. Stack and arrange finished work for pickup by Material Handler.
6. With or without Maintenance Department’s assistance, lubricate the equipment as needed and perform minor maintenance work in and around the Sawyer/Nailer work area.
7. Assist in the unloading of materials such as lumber, cardboard, nails, paper, and other supplies needed in the area, direct and stack as required.
8. Use of crane or forklift may be necessary.
9. Detect and report questionable material, faulty operation, or needed maintenance to Foreman. Give proper care to equipment used. Complete required time and production reports. Observe good housekeeping practices and prescribed safety precautions.
