Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The SEDOA is one of two senior leaders in the University of Utah Health Advancement office reporting directly to the Chief Philanthropy Officer. The SEDOA will be responsible for creating a vision and executing a strategy to continue the rapid growth trajectory of the school and achieve the next level of excellence. The SEDOA will be responsible for developing a comprehensive strategy to engage both grateful patients and alumni in the priorities of the School of Medicine and the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics. Strategic initiatives include the continued growth and development of grateful patient and alumni engagement programs, enhanced collaboration with the University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics, and the development of best-in-class alumni relations, annual fund, and stewardship programs.
The SEDOA will be responsible for establishing best fundraising practices in an academic medical center and will provide overall management to the 15-member School of Medicine Advancement team, including four Senior Directors of Advancement, eight Directors of Advancement and three School of Medicine Alumni Relations professionals.
The SEDOA will oversee the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors and prospects who can make major and principal gifts to the University of Utah School of Medicine. To accomplish this, the SEDOA will mentor and coach the advancement and alumni directors, and their respective staff, in setting strategies for major gift solicitations and identifying opportunities to strengthen, leverage, and engage the organization’s volunteers and advisory boards in meaningful ways. The SEDOA will work with the Directors of Advancement to set individual, school, and departmental fundraising objectives that are meaningful, challenging, realistic, and metric and action-oriented. The role therefore requires a substantial commitment of time and energy to recruit, supervise, and evaluate development officers and other staff to function at optimal effectiveness.
While the SEDOA will have substantial management supervisory and mentoring responsibilities, he or he will also carry a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors, and be visible with key donor and volunteer constituencies, to lead by example.
