MTSI is searching for a highly skilled Space Optical Systems Engineer to join our team in Chantilly, VA. You will provide technical engineering support and analysis of spacecraft, payloads, and optical communications systems in support of the the SPACE DEVELOPMENT AGENCY (SDA). SDA is responsible for the development and deployment of the National Space Defense Architecture (NDSA), a proliferated low earth orbit constellation. SDA is a FAST-PACED organization and is changing the way that the Department of Defense acquires space systems. The NSDA consists of several layers, including the transport layer, tracking layer, and support layer. The transport layer provides the backbone of the NDSA through the development and deployment of optical intersatellite links on hundreds of satellites and the space based implementation of tactical data links. The Tracking layer provides real time threat detection and characterization. The Support layer enables the architecture through the development and deployment of the ground segment.

Responsibilities:
As an Space Optical Systems Engineer with MTSI you shall apply knowledge and expertise to perform technical engineering support and analysis of spacecraft, payloads, and optical communications systems. This is a full-time position in Chantilly, VA with full relocation if required.
Your essential job functions will include but may not be limited to:
- Analyzing warfighter requirements and providing recommendations based on scientific and engineering, hardware and software technical baselines.
- Providing recommendations on systems integration and engineering baseline changes and assessing the technical maturity and risk of development projects.
- Assisting the Government team on potential solutions across a wide variety of multi-domain, tactical and mission area applications.
- Assisting the Government team on with monitoring and assessment of optical payload manufacturing capabilities.
- Assessing and integrating engineering activities across multiple projects and multiple program areas.
- Recommending and coordinating development with related activities of other DoD and non-DoD agencies.
- Assisting with analysis of the design, assembly, integration and testing, data reduction of proposed technical solutions and formulating and evaluation criteria for those solutions.
- Distilling and communicating technically complex information and analysis and recommending solutions to program management team on proposed projects for feasibility and applicability to relevant military mission areas and related activities.
- Assisting in the preparation of briefings, technology roadmaps, initiatives, and related planning and programming products.
- Supporting on-orbit optical communications payloads from cradle to grave.
- Supporting development of optical communications standards.
- Assessing optical payload manufacturing capabilities.
- Providing lessons learned from past experience.
- Preparing, reviewing and editing reports and briefings.
- Participating in identifying risks and formulating mitigation plans for contractor project activities.
- Attending project meetings and reviews to include technical interchange meetings, design reviews, and program management reviews. Assisting the government in analyzing contractor concept designs at the system and subsystem levels.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in Optical Sciences or a closely related field.
- Directly applicable experience in engineering research and development of laboratory projects including knowledge of current state of the art in relevant space vehicle systems.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- requirements analysis and definition.
- mission level and engineering/physics-based design.
- analysis and testing of advanced electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) sensor capabilities.
- communication systems/architecture analysis.
- link budget analysis.
- EO/IR sensor research and development.
Education Requirements:
- Master’s degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience, or a PhD with a minimum of 7 years of experience in Optical Sciences or a closely related field from an accredited university.

Clearance Requirements:
- Active TOP SECRET clearance with SAP and SCI eligibility.
- U.S. Citizenship is required for this position.
