The Valparaiso YMCA is seeking an Staff Accountant to work in the organization's Finance Department. This position is responsible for payroll processing, payroll system maintenance, and administration of payroll related benefits, in addition to additional accounting work as outlined by the Director of Finance. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate seeking their first accounting position.

Compensation range $18-$20/hr.

This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Maintain payroll records (employee info, rates, deductions, taxes, garnishments) and software.
2. Review time and attendance and process biweekly payroll.
3. Manage benefit enrollments, terminations and pay period transactions for Y Retirement. Process billings for payment of retirement.
4. Administration of paid time off.
5. Review 941s, W2s, ACA and other payroll related information as needed to ensure proper filing.
6. Responsible for daily cash management, monthly bank reconciliation, recurring journal entries, non-recurring journal entries, accruals and deferrals.
7. Reconciles assigned balance sheet general ledger accounts and maintenance of supporting ledgers.
8. Serves as a backup for the Director of Finance banking, administrative and financial activities.
9. Assists with year-end closings, audit, tax returns, budget, financial analysis and YUSA reporting.
10. Assists with projects, including but not limited to adhoc reporting, insurance renewals/claims, internal auditing, leases/contracts and grant assistance.
11. May supervise staff and/or volunteers during projects.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

1. Minimum of Associate’s Degree required; Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred.
2. Minimum 2 years’ payroll experience preferred.
3. Intermediate working knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel and Outlook required.
4. Skills in problem analysis and problem resolution at a functional level required.
5. Intermediate organizational skills required.
6. Ability to communicate effectively, and to train and instruct users required.
7. Ability to maintain an exceptionally high degree of confidentiality required.
8. Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification – preferred.
9. Attention to detail and accuracy required.
