Reporting to the Director of Advising & Academic Success, the Student Success Coach will take a holistic approach to student mentoring and success and will serve as the primary academic advisor for first-year undergraduate students who have declared a major in our School of Business and Computer Science. This position may also advise other majors as needed, including students with Undeclared majors.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing comprehensive advising and coaching to students and supporting their progress toward timely completion of their degree, advising first-year undergraduate students who have declared majors in the School of Business and Computer Science with regard to all curricular requirements, following up on academic alerts and concerns related to academic standing, connecting students with all resources necessary to support their success at the College, tracking and encouraging student follow through on resource referrals, liaising with faculty, particularly in the School of Business and Computer Science, and supporting the School of Business and Computer Science in the design, implementation, and assessment of curricular and co-curricular activities.

This role requires collaboration within the Office of Advising & Academic Success, faculty in the School of Business and Computer Science, as well as others, to provide outstanding service to our students, supporting their academic, social, and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees. The position requires periodic weekend and evening commitments.

Essential Functions:

1. Retention & Student Success Program Planning:

  • Identify in person and/or through faculty interaction and/or through Academic Alerts, at-risk students and provide support, guidance and referral to academic departments, faculty, and cross campus support services, as needed;
  • Support planning of special events that facilitate individual and group advising, including collaborative events across campus that pertain to Business and Computer Science students, and others as needed;
  • Evaluate student progress and reassess programming and delivery for continuous improvement of student success, give suggestions for innovation and ongoing improvement;
  • Conduct a great deal of networking across the institution to encourage students engage with appropriate resources to support their success. Collaborate with student services, technology, and others to coordinate and execute student retention strategies based on best practices and institutional research;
  • Develop, execute, and evaluate activities to support students on their caseload including workshops, print and web materials, and peer support. Coordinates such activities with other Academic Services areas including others in Advising & Academic Success, and with other areas including Enrollment Management and Student Affairs;
  • Track and assess data on the efficacy of outreach and intervention efforts; recommends and implements changes based on such data;
  • Engage in continuous efforts to improve students' experience, to identify needs for additional resources or interventions, and to work with others to assess the effectiveness of student success efforts;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in Office of Academic Success and on the Academic Services Team through cross-training, information sharing, and planning;
  • Other duties as assigned.

2. Direct Service to Students:

  • Advise first-year students, and other class years as needed, in the School of Business and Computer Science;
  • Engage students in decision making processes and promote appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements;
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality, update student advising records, and contribute to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs;
  • Provide academic and professional advising in individual sessions for assigned undergraduate students, working closely with advisees to understand and help them plan to meet requirements for on-time graduation;
  • Provide support regarding degree audits, regular communications with advisees, maintain up-to-date and accurate student records utilizing Curry College's various software platforms including our portal, Degree Works, the Advising Profile, and Banner;
  • Respond to Curry's centralized web-based Academic Alert system as a means of coordinating early interventions with students in their caseload;
  • Monitor student progress towards completion, provide extensive outreach to students, and assist students with problem solving with a particular focus on connecting students with appropriate supports;
  • Communicate directly with students to positively impact timely graduation in partnership with the School of Business & Computer Science, Advising & Academic Success, and the Registrar's Office.

3. Direct Service to Parents and Families:

  • Provide proactive information to parents and families to guide expectations, and inform families about academic processes and policies;
  • Meet with students and families on concerns related to course scheduling and progress towards completion.

Additional Functions:

  • Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy;
  • Initiate independent actions and initiatives including creative problem-solving with families and a keen awareness of program requirements and academic counseling options;
  • Assess complex situations and respond with a clear, supportive and consistent message.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree.
  • Two years of experience in academic advising /mentoring/success coaching at the college level.
  • Knowledge of student advising and student development theory.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to work effectively with a variety of individuals.
  • Demonstrable computing skills and efficiency utilizing computing applications.
  • Ability to follow-up, follow-through, multi-task, set priorities and adhere to deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with students in a School of Business and/or Computer Science.
  • Experience working with students and faculty around issues of teaching and learning at a small, liberal arts-based college.
  • Experience working with students on developmental learning in the context of an institution which recognizes and supports students with learning disabilities.
