Job Title: COPE Director (Summer Camp Ropes Course Director)

Camp Description

Camp Olmsted is the largest camp at the Goshen Scout Reservation, located among the Blue Ridge Mountains in Goshen, Virginia. Camp Olmsted hosts a traditional merit badge program, featuring COPE and Climbing, a Tech Center, Aquatics, Shooting Sports, and more. Employment Dates

June 10, 2023 – August 1, 2023

Work weeks last from Sunday - Friday, with one night off during the week, and Saturdays off after participant departure. There may be an opportunity for an extra week of employment, from June 4, 2023 – June 9, 2023, to assist in a reservation wide facilities week.

Compensation

Salary starts at $350/week

Staff will live on site at Camp Olmsted during previously listed dates. Tent quarters with electricity are provided in “staff site.” Laundry facilities are on site. All meals Sunday Brunch – Saturday Brunch are provided. Staff also receive an employee discount for BSA uniform parts at NCAC Scout Store locations.

Job Description

We are looking for a COPE (Challenging Outdoor Personal Experience) Director to supervise and run weeklong COPE courses, featuring low, medium, and high course elements for Scouts BSA and Venturing participants at the Goshen Scout Reservation. They will engage scouts in team building exercises and encourage them to challenge and expand their individual comfort zones. This position is also responsible for the oversight/teaching of the Climbing Merit Badge, and evening “open climb’ program. The COPE Director should be an enthusiastic and experienced camper, and possess originality, creativity, and open mindedness. The COPE Director reports to the Camp Olmsted Camp Director and Program Director, and is responsible for area staff members in accordance with the standards of the Boy Scouts of America and the National Capital Area Council.

Job Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming environment for scouts to challenge themselves and strengthen their bond as a unit.
  • Curate a week-long COPE program, structured to create increasing challenges for individuals and teach teamwork skills through a series of initiative games, trust events, low, and high elements.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of all COPE and Climbing Area and elements.
  • Maintain staff morale in program area.
  • Actively participate in camp-wide programs (Campfires, flag ceremonies, etc.).
  • Take part in base camp duties (campsite preparation, general clean up, etc.).
  • Fulfill other camp duties/tasks as requested/required.

Job Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be or be willing to become a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
  • Must be willing to attend and complete the “Cope Director” certification through the National Camp School (NCS) program, in accordance with the National Camping Accreditation Program (NCAP), prior to the beginning of employment, at the expense of National Capital Area Council.
  • Must be willing to take a variety of other BSA required trainings (including, but not limited to Youth Protection Training, First Aid (AED + CPR), and Weather Hazards), prior to employment date.
