Job Overview
The deckhand will, under general supervision assist with daily tasks such as maintenance of TAMUG vessels and their components, as well as work hand-in-hand with vessel masters and other crew members to ensure safe and timely operation of TAMUG vessels both inland and offshore for a wide range of classes and scientific experiments. The deckhand will also work to preserve the quality of TAMUG's Small Boat Basin and department assets including the Marine Education Support and Safety Operation vessels, vehicles, trailers, and facilities. The deckhand position helps prepare students seeking advanced employment opportunities in the maritime field after graduation.
Roles and Responsibilities

Handle lines to moor vessels to pier.

Stand watch in order to look for obstructions to a ship's path or locate for navigational aids.

Assist Captain and supervisory personnel to maintain vessel equipment and systems.

Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all common areas.
General Qualifications

Must be able to work Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters.

Must be at least 18 years old.

Must be enrolled as a student at TAMUG and have a valid driver's license.

First Aid/CPR/AED Certified (within 3 months of employment).

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Work effectively and communicate with other crew members to safely facilitate use of TAMUG vessels.

Demonstrate the ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner as well as consider new solutions to potential problems both on and off the vessel.

Exhibit the ability to identify the needs of others (i.e. captains, students, professors, etc.) and articulate new ways to better meet those needs.

Demonstrate a high level of safety awareness when working in hazardous environments on-board vessels.

Develop leadership skills to coach and develop other crew members, identify key strengths that will further the student's career opportunities in the maritime field.
