Current Opportunity: Technical Product Manager – Cape Town, South Africa
The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation is seeking a Technical Product Manager for their Data Driven Districts (“DDD”) program. The DDD program empowers education leaders in South Africa to make real-time data driven decisions to impact R-12 student learning outcomes. This program has been rolled out in partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) with a national Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underpinning a strong working relationship.
Through the DDD Technology solution, we are able to process data collected from schools across the country, and model that data to power insightful reporting dashboards thus helping education officials to make informed data driven decisions which can lead to improved learner outcomes across the South Africa school system. As the Technical Product Manager, you would own the Technology platform which includes a modernized suite of reports built in Power BI that displays information to education officials at all levels in the South Africa schooling system by leveraging Azure Synapse Analytics.
We are looking for candidates with a proven track record of managing a successful technology product. We believe a strong candidate will possess a combination of solid technical skills, data driven decision making, a strong focus on the customer and design, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to deeply understand market trends and competitive strategies. This role is based in Cape Town, South Africa.
Key Responsibilities for this role include:
- Gain a deep understanding of the R-12 South Africa Education System, the stakeholders, and products in this space.
- Build a solid understanding of the DDD Technology Platform as it stands today.
- As the Technical Partner for the MSDF DDD Program team, being the Technical Subject Matter expert in conversations with DBE & other stakeholders.
- Define and own the Technology product strategy and roadmap that aligns to the business goals and outlines expectations for the various stakeholders.
- Planning, execution, and management of day-to-day operations of product enhancements through their full software development cycle
- Generate mockups or proof of concepts to create buy-in for evolving ideas as needed.
- Actively manage development against the roadmap, acting as a bridge between business/ program team, development team, and end users.
- Manage DDD Technology vendors and those relationships.
- Gain deep understanding and manage all aspects of the Power BI implementation.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Proven product ownership or management of BI/analytics offerings.
- Strong knowledge and experience of data, BI/analytics, reporting platforms and data visualization techniques and tools specifically Power BI
- Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics is a big Plus.
- Experience collaborating with teams composed of consultants, sub-contractors, and full-time employees.
- Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work across multiple groups and levels in organization.
- Excellent problem solving and decision-making ability - able to synthesize multiple data points and navigate ambiguity to recommend viable solutions.
- Leadership and organization skills – to plan and execute projects successfully, influence business and technical stakeholders, vendors and team members
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in IT/Computer Science or technology/engineering related field. (Required)
- Minimum 5+ years of proven experience in data warehousing and business intelligence roles. (Required)
- Minimum 3+ years managing Power BI projects. (Required)
- Minimum 3+ years practical, hands-on experience with the following:
- Building data visualizations and reports in Power BI (Required)
- Data warehousing in Azure Synapse Analytics (Preferred)
- Data modeling in Azure Synapse Analytics (Preferred)
Typical amount of travel required to perform this role successfully: 6 - 8 weeks per year.
