AEL is hiring for a Supervisor for our Toxicology department.
Position Summary
Using theoretical knowledge and laboratory experience, the Toxicology Technical Consultant is expected to lead the Department (with the direction of the VP Lab Ops) to achieve the overall production goals, improve the department’s processes, manage quality, prepare the department for CAP and State inspections, manage department proficiency testing and reduce the technical hands-on time to improve product delivery. Responsibilities will also include managing the lab’s daily activities by directing workflow, training personnel on updated processes, and other laboratory actives as needed. The Toxicology Technical Consultant is also expected to pursue national accreditation in toxicology through the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC).
This position is expected to contribute to process improvement to include automation or instrumentation when practical and software or programing as available to reduce the technical hands-on time and improve product delivery.
Principle Accountabilities / Responsibilities
- Assures proper specimen processing is followed as described in procedure manuals to prevent adverse patient outcome.
- Perform laboratory procedures as outlined in the procedure manual, as instructed during training and as described in instrument manuals.
- Provide accurate patient test results by following approved policies and procedures to assist physicians in patient evaluation and assessment.
- Perform quality control, calibration and instrument maintenance in accordance with department procedures, instrument manuals and bench assignments to assure the validity of test results.
- Continually updates personal skills via continuing education or in-service programs.
- Contributes to cost containment by appropriate utilization of supplies and disposal of waste.
- Perform laboratory related activities as directed by leadership.
- Problem solving and troubleshooting are routine expectations of this position.
- Report results in a timely manner to include any special handling of critical values for good patient care.
- Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and consistent documentation.
- Pursue national accreditation in toxicology or chemistry
- Process improvement meetings:
- to be held monthly at first and may increase in frequency with tenure of the position
- to be organized & led by the Toxicology Technical Consultant to present improvement ideas
- Will be responsible for writing proposed changes and will work with the Director and Quality Manager to implement any updates approved for incorporation.
- Responsible for training staff on new processes as they are adopted.
- Improve process to ensure 95% of testing is completed within 5 days of receipt in the lab.
- Provide toxicology-related testing consultation to internal and external clients.
- Track repeat and rerun rates.
- Ensure staff is well-trained in all areas of the laboratory to avoid delays due to scheduling.
- Optimize instrument utilization and confirmation practices to increase volume up to at least 350 samples/day.
- Optimize confirmation methods.
- Optimize instrument set-up and workflow.
- Develop automated sample preparation processes.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation through monthly monitoring of QA and QC practices.
- Compile and maintain QA/QC log for screening and confirmations.
- Ensure department is in compliance with State the CAP regulations.
- Manage department proficiency testing.
- Establishment and upkeep of instrument maintenance logs.
- Ensure competency assessments are completed and documented.
- Improve all chain of custody processes, from collection to MRO review.
- Establishment of department’s culture and staff engagement activities.
Experience
Previous toxicology experience preferred.
Education and Certification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s or Doctoral degree with at least 24 semester hours of science courses. Within the minimum 24 hours at least 6 semester must be chemistry courses, 6 semester hours must be in biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical technology in any combination, from an accredited institution, AND a minimum of 4 years of full-time toxicology experience — including at least 2 years of full-time interpretation of LCMS-MS data.
- Other qualification routes exist but the above described qualifications constitute the preferred background for a successful candidate
- Documented progress toward TN General Supervisor license.
Physical Requirements
Work requires some physical effort. Frequent walking, sitting, standing, typing, grasping and twisting with both hands. Lifting or performing other work requiring light physical exertion (up to 30 pounds) is required.
Environmental Conditions
Work is performed under basically normal working conditions as in a standard lab environment.
