About Our Opportunity
The Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities Department is excited to hire a full-time Tradesworker to join the WNC Nature Center. The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair City facilities, grounds, related facilities and equipment. Performs routine tasks to ensure the safety and well-being of building occupants while providing excellent customer service.

Typical Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7 am to 3:30 pm (40 hours per week)

Initial review of applications will occur as received. This position will remain open until February 19, 2023 at 5pm or until a sufficient number of applications are received.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists with preventative maintenance and troubleshooting all HVAC, electrical and plumbing failures. Repairs roof leaks and drainage issues. Evaluates the need for repair or replacement systems and devices.
  • Answers and evaluates customer and employee complaints to determine necessary repairs or services needed to correct the situation. Performs customer relation's duties by handling issues promptly and courteously.
  • Operates trucks, construction equipment, power tools and various maintenance devices.
  • Processes work orders and purchases parts and materials.
  • Performs general carpentry work assisting in the construction, repair or alteration of floors, walls, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows, screens and various other wooden articles; hangs, plasters and finishes drywall.
  • Performs general painting work, which includes preparing surfaces and applying paint or stain.
  • Performs general plumbing work to assist in installing fixtures, repairing leaks, and replacing valves and faulty fittings or sections in lines.
  • Assists in the maintenance of various electrical systems, including replacing faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, and insulators.
  • Assists in maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, including changing filters, installing ductwork and chassis parts, wrapping pipes in insulation, etc.
  • Performs various custodial duties, such as cleaning bathrooms, mopping and sweeping floors, stripping and buffing floors, changing light bulbs, and emptying trash receptacles.
  • Performs other similar duties as required.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalency required.
  • Building repair and maintenance experience preferred.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class Driver's License (or out-of-state with ability to obtain the same).

Knowledge:
  • General knowledge of learned procedures, practices, routines to deal effectively with routine work.
  • Some knowledge of the standard practices, materials and equipment related to the plumbing, masonry, electrical, carpentry, painting, equipment repair and related maintenance trades.
  • Some knowledge of basic groundskeeping practices and procedures.
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety requirements associated with general maintenance and construction work.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Skilled in the use and care of various tools and equipment employed in the work.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches, layouts and blueprints.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
