The Sonoma County Public Infrastructure (SoCoPi) Department leads the way to a safe and sustainable community by planning, building, managing, and maintaining Sonoma County's investment in quality services and infrastructure. As an integral member of our team, the Traffic Signal Technician is responsible for performing the skilled, technical work of maintaining and repairing traffic signal equipment and other electrical traffic control devices. While the typical work week is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm PST this position is part of a 3-member team that provides a rotational on-call response after-hours and on weekends and holidays to public safety issues such as pole knock-down, lighting needs, signal mal-functioning, etc.
As the ideal candidate for our position, you have a safety-focused mindset, are able to work independently, and possess the ability to communicate well with management, co-workers, contractors, and the public. Additionally, you also have experience:
- Installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signal equipment, including signal luminaries, flashing beacon systems, and radar feedback signs
- Repairing, replacing, or modifying signal head components, microprocessors, relays, switches, fuses, and controller cabinet parts
- Locating and marking field signals, lighting and beacon systems, and underground infrastructure for the Underground Service Alert (USA) Program
- Digging trenches, pouring foundations, pulling wire, and installing pull boxes and conduit
- Estimating time, materials, and equipment necessary for successful project completion
- Inspecting contractor-installed equipment
- Investigating and responding to complaints
- Maintaining accurate work records; ordering supplies, parts, and materials

This recruitment is being conducted to fill a Traffic Signal Technician position in the SoCoPi, formerly the Transportation and Public Works Department. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Education: Any combination of education and/or training which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, completion of high school or general education equivalent and technical coursework in electronics, traffic signal maintenance and repair would provide this opportunity.
Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, four years of experience in a municipal setting maintaining and repairing electrical traffic control devices would provide this opportunity.
License: Possession of a valid California license at the appropriate level including necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Special Certifications: A Certificate of Completion from the International Municipal Signal Association for a Traffic Signal Technician Level I, or equivalent certificate is desirable.
Considerable knowledge of: the methods, materials, tools, equipment and practices used in the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signal, signal laminar and flashing beacon systems; electrical practices, principles and components as related to traffic signals and associated equipment.
Working knowledge of: electrical testing and locating equipment; occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the work.
Ability to: work independently and make sound decisions relating to work methods and tools used on electrical traffic control devices; perform work at heights and work in emergency and hazardous situations; interpret signalized intersection drawings, traffic operation timing sheets and electrical schematic drawings; maintain accurate records and prepare reports of work performed; operate computerized equipment and related traffic signal programs.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:
An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position.
