Job Description Summary
The Lavin Lab in the Department of Neuroscience is looking for a highly motivated interactiveResearch Specialist I to join the research team. The purpose of this position is to work as part of
an addiction research team that studies cognitive deficits elicited by drugs of abuse for an NIH
funded grant.
1) The applicant will conduct behavioral experiments in rats. This will include daily animal care and
handling which consists of transporting animals from DLAR facilities into our laboratory. Further,
the behaviors under investigation are cognitive deficits, so the applicant will learn to train animals
in several different behavioral tasks and evaluate performance (35 %).
2) The applicant will be required to learn how to conduct intracerebral surgery in rodents. This will
include training in animal anesthesia and aseptic surgical techniques. (35 %).
3) The applicant will be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes supplies and
preparing stock solutions (15%).
4) Order laboratory supplies as needed using the University online ordering system. Keep lab in
clean and orderly condition. (10%).
5) Other duties as assigned (5%).
The individual should be able to take direction from others, work in a team environment, think
independently, multitask, have good fine motor skills, and stamina. Job is 40 hours per week,
includes weekends, and holidays. The individual should be able to maintain a high work ethic with
minimal supervision from the PI and colleagues.

Job Description
Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and two years work experience in a clinical or research setting; a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science may be substituted for the two years of required experience.
Preferred/ Additional Requirements:
A bachelor's degree in biochemistry, neuroscience, molecular cell biology, cellular neurobiology, immunology, or any other related fields is required.
The successful candidate should have good team working skills and be able to manage time efficiently.
Accurate record keeping and being attentive to detail are required.
Candidates should be able to use Microsoft Excel and have at least moderate proficiency in general PC computer skills (software use, file management).
