Your Opportunity

Our plans create places, networks, and infrastructure that connect people to place, to prosperity, and to each other. UP planners and designers lead transformational projects in communities across North America. Our team has won dozens of awards for work ranging from downtown and district plans to community-wide and regional plans. We work closely with our colleagues across Stantec in architecture, engineering, landscape architecture, real estate, mobility, environmental science, and other disciplines to provide plans that are both visionary and feasible, driven by data and grounded in market realities.

The planner will work with the team primarily on projects in the public and nonprofit sectors, as well as potential opportunities to work on private-sector projects. They should have an interest in community-scale projects, such as comprehensive plans, that involve a high level of interdisciplinary and integrated strategic thinking, both physical and programmatic. The work will include incorporating planning solutions to challenges such as affordable housing and income inequality, climate change and sea level rise, multimodal mobility, and resource-efficiency into planning initiatives and documents. A strong commitment to effective community engagement and constituency-building is critical.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Research and analysis on a variety of planning topics, data, and trends, such as socio-demographics, housing, economic conditions, real estate, energy, resilience, and infrastructure.
  • Preparation of GIS maps and analysis.
  • Data-driven analysis.
  • Organization, coordination, and participation in community engagement workshops, and other events.
  • Development of online surveys and analysis of results.
  • Preparation of draft project materials including handouts, PowerPoints, flyers, display boards, and so on.
  • Writing and preparation of draft reports and plans.
  • Work with client leaders and staff as needed.
  • Work effectively with urban designers on conceptual planning, design guidelines, and similar design elements of planning documents.
  • Work effectively with graphic designers on producing infographics, project materials, reports, and plans.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong communications skills—both graphic and especially verbal and written.
  • Experience with the production of planning reports and documents and a thorough knowledge and familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with GIS map production and data management.
  • Data analysis expertise in Excel/Sheets. Experience with python, SQL, R, and other statistical analysis packages is preferred.
  • Ability to engage effectively with a wide variety of clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated responsibility, maturity, and commitment to a team-driven environment.
  • Ability to help organize and manage complex projects
  • Demonstrated research and analysis experience including demographic, housing, and economic analysis.
  • understanding of land use and zoning strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and succinctly
  • Demonstrated quantitative skills
  • Ability to communicate persuasively to a variety of audiences—technical, policymaking, and the general public
  • Interest in finding integrated solutions that incorporate placemaking, economic and environmental sustainability, and resilience.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish is not required but desirable.

  • Willingness to travel as needed.

Education and Experience

  • A graduate degree in Urban Design, Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field. A Liberal Arts bachelor’s degree is preferred.
  • 1-4 years of relevant work experience.

Typical office environment working with computers. Some travel may be required (25%), such as delivering plans or documents to reviewing agencies or clients or to attend meetings. May occasionally visit study areas, construction sites and/or be exposed to outside elements and inclement weather conditions.
