The Position:

The Youth Mentor works closely with other New Avenues staff and community partners developing and implementing an innovative, adaptable, survivor-centered, co-advocacy, service model for commercially and sexually exploited youth across Multnomah County. They will serve youth ages 12-25 that are at risk of, or currently being, sexually exploited or trafficked. This mentor provides outreach, resource & referral, along with individualized support to young people. Using a positive youth development and trauma-informed approach, the work will focus on prevention, intervention and transition through harm reduction, and life skill development & support. Due to the overrepresentation of youth of color and LGBTQIA2S+ youth impacted by trafficking, this position focuses on providing culturally specific and responsive services for youth while based out of our Youth Opportunity Center in East County. The Youth mentor will act as a Culturally-Specific Specialist on three levels: 1) working with predominantly Black, as well as Indigenous, and POC (BIPOC) youth referred to New Day, 2) acting as one of the team leaders on BIPOC culturally-specific issues for program youth/staff/interns, and 3) serve as a point person for BIPOC culturally-specific advocacy and education for New Day with our community partners. In addition to providing direct services to youth, The Youth Mentor meets with regional stakeholders and practitioners to develop best-practice and enhance community response to sex trafficking.

Knowledge & Skills:

· Proven ability and commitment to working with BIPOC as well as LGBTQ and other culturally diverse staff, participants and community, particularly around the politics, theories and practice models surrounding gender and sexuality.

  • Ability and desire to work with diverse staff and excel in a multi-cultural environment
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Use of personal automobile for transporting self and clients for work purposes
  • Must have access to an automobile, a valid driver’s license, and active auto insurance on that vehicle
  • Must be willing to be CPR trained and certified

Education & Experience:

  • Lived experience, applicable work experience, OR a college degree in social work, psychology or related human services field required
  • A minimum two years of experience working with high-risk youth, people impacted by the sex trades OR providing culturally specific services for BIPOC communities
  • Prior experience engaging youth who face multiple barriers, preferably around contexts associated with exploitation
