Academic Specialist
SUMMARY
Under the direction of the ELA Coordinator, the Academic Specialist will support students in the remediation and acquisition of the literacy skills necessary for learning to read, reading to learn, and deep comprehension.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Implement provided literacy specific training.- Provide direct literacy instruction to Kindergarten through 8th grade students in individual and/or small group settings.
- Follow lesson plans, objectives, and guidelines with ELA Coordinator’s guidance.
- Collaborate with teachers and ELA Coordinator to identify the literacy needs of students and to set learning goals, targets, and possible additional services/supports.
- Administer literacy benchmark testing, program assessments, and assist with analysis of data results.
- Collect, verify, track, and maintain clear records for each student.
- Maintain teaching equipment, teaching materials, and supplies.
- Maintain regular communication with the classroom teacher and parents of students receiving services.
- Build and maintain positive rapport with students.
- Engage in coaching and learning sessions with ELA coordinator to support program implementation.
- Assist students using technology, software, and materials related to literacy programs.
- Provide information to monitor and evaluate the quality, responsiveness, efficiency, and effectiveness of assigned programs, method and procedures, and work with literacy team on the continuous improvement of programs and services.
- Collaborate with other Academic Specialists to ensure an on-going system-wide intervention program is provided
- Perform other duties and responsibilities related to literacy as assigned by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines
Verified completion of two years of college or 48 semester hours or have two-years of verifiable experience working with students specifically in the area of literacy.- Previous experience working with students
- Literacy instruction background
- Demonstrated compassion and understanding for children
- Experience working with confidential records preferred
- Shall have the ability to work and communicate effectively with parents, students, and staff members.
Knowledge of:
District and department policies and procedures;- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, iPads, and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases;
- Pertinent local, state and federal laws, ordinances, codes, and rules.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Effective use of target literacy language including pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and reading comprehension.
- Use of computers and technology, to include, but not limited to email, internet, Microsoft Office or equivalent software, Google suite, spreadsheets.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid State Driver’s License may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with public and staff.
