Job Description: Art Teacher (leave replacement)

Start Date: 25th August 2023- 23rd November 2023

Reports to: Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Coordinator

Brief Description: The Art teacher is a full-time position teaching grades one through eight. The art teacher will work closely with the other Visual and Performing arts (VAPA) teachers, Learning Specialist, and other community members as needed. Art classes will consist of mixed-age student groups: Lower Elementary 1-3 grades, Upper Elementary 4-5 grades, Selectives 6-8 grades and the Middle School theater production with 7-8 grades. Art lessons will be formulated in accordance with the curriculum and policies of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. The art teacher will also be expected to attend all F&S meetings, staff work days, VAPA team meetings, and after school rehearsals and performances.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and teach Art lessons in accordance with BHMS curriculum and Montessori philosophy to first through eighth grade students
• Maintain student records based on classroom observations with regard to attendance, growth, skills development and achievement
• Prepare reports for parents in accordance with the established policies of BHMS, using the VAPA Report Writing Guidelines
• Maintain an organized and orderly environment in the art room
• Contribute to and participate in Lower Elementary presentation, and sixth through eighth grade trimester 1 presentation.
• Supervise recess art for fourth through eighth grade students
• Order and maintain art supplies for art classes and for school wide use
• Establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with students, parents, and other teachers and school personnel
• Comply with all established policies and procedures of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School

• Take on other duties as assigned by VAPA Coordinator and/or Assistant Head of School

Skills and Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Art Education at a minimum
• A minimum of 3 years Art teaching experience, with elementary through middle school students
• Be comfortable with technology and making art virtually
• Familiarity with Montessori philosophy a plus
• Experience teaching ceramics preferred
