ASSISTANT TRADES SUPERVISOR – PLUMBING
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
To oversee the plumbing and boiler system maintenance of the WSFCS District. Employee will perform skilled work and oversee the work performed by plumbing/boiler employees by assisting the department supervisor with planning the work of the crews, serving as field supervisor by assigning work, inspecting work in progress and upon completion for adherence to trade standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, directs, and inspects the work of a number of small crews in the department’s trade.
- Assists the department supervisor with purchasing material, supplies and equipment, coordinating work with contractors and school officials, and inspecting contracted work.
- Assigns individual workers and teams to perform routine and emergency work orders and inspects the work of employees for adherence to department and trade standards.
- Evaluates employee job performance, counseling and coaching employees when required and provides feedback to Department Supervisor on all employee matters.
- Assists Department Supervisor in coordinating employee training and maintaining employee attendance records.
- Oversees work being performed by outside contractors.
- Assists the department supervisor with coordinating and scheduling with WS/FCS Administrators and staff.
- Purchases and maintains an appropriate inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
- Reviews and maintains preventive maintenance schedules and procedures for equipment.
- Utilizes Microsoft Office Suites to produce documents and spreadsheets for reports..
- Assist the Maintenance Division in snow removal as needed.
- Assumes the responsibilities of the Plumbing Supervisor during their absence.
- Clear snow from driveways, parking lots, and sidewalks.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of the plumbing and boiler maintenance trade.
- Thorough knowledge of building plumbing construction and material.
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, parts, and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions in the work.
- Thorough knowledge of state and local laws, regulations, building/fire codes related to the work.
- General knowledge of effective supervisory practices relating to motivation, communication and delegation.
- General knowledge of WSFCS personnel, purchasing and budgeting policies and procedures.
- Ability to train subordinates in methods, procedures, and skills.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to issue clear and understandable written and oral instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret manufacturer’s literature, drawings, schematics and blueprints.
- Ability to operate vehicles safely.
- Ability to maintain, compile and analyze manual and computerized records and reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and school personnel.
- Follows OSHA and safety procedures, which may include, department protocols, appropriate attire, and observing weight limits as it relates to utilizing portable extension ladders and step ladders.
- Ability to assign and inspect the work of subordinates.
- Ability to train employees in methods, procedures, and skills.
- Ability to detect by inspection broken or worn parts.
- Ability to understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, drawings and schematics.
- Ability to maintain, compile and analyze manual and computerized records and reports accurately.
- Ability to utilize e-mail as a communication tool.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and school personnel.
- Ability to report to Supervisor and perform related tasks and duties as required.
- Ability to operate fleet vehicles safely.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, co-workers, management, supervisors, subordinates, and the general public.
- Ability to issue and follow clear and understandable written and oral instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate routine records.
- Ability to operate a computer for basic tasks such as for the work order system, email, word processing, spreadsheets, and etc.
- Ability to work occasional scheduled overtime and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to after-hours emergencies, which may include weekends and holidays.
- Ability to engage in heavy manual labor in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to exercise the physical strength and agility necessary to perform job tasks, with a minimum of 50 lbs. lifting and carrying capacity and occasional 75 lb. lifting capacity.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, OSHA guidelines, operating and maintenance instructions, contracts, and procedures manuals.
- Ability to clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to perform work assignments on varying shifts
- Ability to manage the time and adjust the actions of others as well as oneself.
- Ability to drive to more than one location during the work week
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to speak in front of groups of employees to instruct and train on procedures and safety techniques.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: Associates Degree in Plumbing, HVAC, or Industrial Maintenance and three years’ work experience at journey level or above, including at least one-year of supervisory or lead worker experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Driver’s license required
- Universal CFC Certification
- Hold, or obtain within one-year of employment, at minimum a Mechanical P1 Contractors License.
