The Team
This position is within the Translational Sciences domain. The Translational Sciences team combines scientific, clinical, and investment expertise to optimize the commercialization path for products and solutions addressing diseases with high unmet medical need. In January 2020, we announced a commitment to invest $1 billion in life sciences companies across all stages and have established a portfolio of 12 companies developing cutting edge technologies ranging from gene therapies for retina disorders, to cell therapies for cancer. Our efforts include internal initiatives to support the commercialization of cutting-edge research by launching strategic, early-stage companies and accelerating the application of scientific discoveries to narrow the gap between bench and bedside. We also seek opportunities to make complimentary investments in or establish high impact, value creating partnerships with established, industry-leading companies across the U.S. and across the globe to accelerate the development of innovative therapies that improve health care and enable life changing medicine. The Role
The Translational Sciences team is seeking an Associate to collaboratively lead efforts supporting investment diligence and execution for internal and external investment opportunities. Associates are expected to have a working knowledge of the scientific, technical, and commercial aspects of life science innovations and have experience supporting the diligence process associated with healthcare investments and venture financings for relevant products and/or companies. By applying these skills, a successful candidate will contribute to Translational Sciences investments on a daily basis.
The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, independent learner with a track record of effective stakeholder management and the ability to identify and trade-off potential risks and rewards while being solutions-driven and action-oriented. Strong project management, organizational, analytical, and communication skills are also critical for success. This role reports to a Director, Translational Sciences.
Responsibilities
Leads diligence efforts, in collaboration with the senior investment team, for investment opportunities from scientific, clinical, commercial, financial, and legal perspectives
Independently conducts project support aspects for strategic initiatives with oversight from leadership
Market Assessment: Complete competitive landscape analyses, analyze commercial opportunities, and help assess market potential
Financial Management: Budget development, monitoring, and revenue/expense forecasting
Business Development: Industry and company analyses, author business plans
Administrative Support: Maintain project planning documentation, prepare presentations, author and distribute high level project updates
Drafts investment memos
Prepares detailed valuation analyses and returns models using industry-standard methods
Maintains current industry knowledge and monitors trends to assist leadership in the definition and prioritization of investment focus areas
Builds and manages relationships with entrepreneurs, management, principal investigators, and other internal and external stakeholders
Develops project timelines, identifies key areas of risk, and generates and presents mitigation strategies
Support start-up of internally formed companies
Prepares and delivers presentations to the team, leadership, and key stakeholders
Brings forward ideas to improve execution and efficiencies
Fosters a collaborative team environment, including training and mentoring peers, and maintains a positive attitude
Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
B.S. degree required
Advanced degrees are desirable and can be considered in lieu of work experience
Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience or formal training in:
Venture capital, management consulting, investment banking, OR
Life sciences business development, strategy, or finance role
Experience independently planning and managing projects with a demonstrated history of successful execution in project execution
Ability to manage upward and tailor communications based upon audience
Ability to adapt and be flexible in response to dynamic priorities
Strong written and oral communication skills
Strong problem solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills
Strong organizational skills
Consideration for Associate Analyst or Analyst level will be based on experience and hiring manager discretion
